What is the Golden Age?

At some times in some parts of the world the development of civilization reached extraordinary heights, and people did great things. One such period was the Greek Golden Age, which lasted from 500 to 429 BC. At the beginning of the XNUMXth century, the Persians invaded Greece, but the Greeks rebelled and drove them away. The people of Athens led this struggle, which made Athens the richest and most powerful state in Greece. Athens built a fleet of ships that was larger than all of Greece's fleets combined. Wealth flowed to Athens, their sources were tribute from other states, trade, silver mines. The population of Athens quadrupled.

Thanks to new people, strength, prosperity, art in Athens was in its prime, as never before in history. It was the age of Pericles, named after the wise leader of Athens. During this period, the construction of the Parthenon, one of the most beautiful and famous buildings in the world, began.

Among the people who lived in Athens at that time were the great sculptor Phidias, the thinker Socrates, the playwrights Sophocles and Euripides, who wrote some of the greatest plays in history. Everyone who could make Athens even more beautiful was encouraged, and many masterpieces appeared. At the same time, thanks to the great prosperity and such power, people had a lot of free time.

The citizens of Athens had more intellectual and cultural interests than any society before or since. The golden age of Greece created treasures, masterpieces, works of art that have influenced the whole world, even our time. Later in the XNUMXth century BC. e. a struggle began between Athens and Sparta with its allies. The culture of Athens began to decline and the Golden Age ended.
