Why did the village old-timer from Eugene Onegin crush the flies?

In "Eugene Onegin" one can find the lines: "He settled in that peace // Where the village old-timer // Scolded for forty years with the housekeeper, // He looked out the window and crushed flies." The word "fly" is used here not in its direct meaning, but as a metaphor for alcohol. Another metaphor of a drunk person is also known - "under the fly", where the word fly is used in the same sense.

Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

Where do jumping beans live?

Mexican shrubs of the genus Sebastiania produce seeds - jumping beans. Inside these beans lays the larvae of a moth of the species Cydia deshaisiana. After hatching from the egg, the larva eats the inside of the bean and creates an empty space for itself inside it, then attaching itself to the bean with many silk threads. If the bean is exposed to heat - for example, a sunbeam shines on it or someone took it in hand - then it begins to "jump". This is caused by the fact that the larvae begin to pull on the threads - moving the bean, they try to get away from the heat source, which can lead to dehydration and kill them.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Smart lighting system for office buildings from Philips 07.04.2014

Philips has announced an innovative smart lighting system for large office buildings that will help reduce energy costs and improve worker comfort.

The presented platform is based on the use of light-emitting diode lighting (LED) devices and Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) technology, which allows the transmission of electrical energy and data exchange over a standard twisted pair cable in an Ethernet network. In other words, Philips proposes to integrate the lighting system with computer infrastructure, which will allow collecting additional information and optimizing the operation of climate complexes.

Thus, LED lamps can be equipped with sensors to measure temperature, humidity and detect people in the room. This will allow the computer program to calculate on which days of the week and hours some rooms are empty, while others, on the contrary, are occupied. Based on this information, you can optimize the operation of heating and air conditioning systems, change the operating mode of LED lamps and adjust the cleaning schedule.

Lighting fixtures can also be equipped with wireless communication chips. In this case, employees using an application for a smartphone or tablet will be able to change the mode of operation of individual lamps in their work area, creating the most comfortable conditions.

Finally, the "smart" lighting system can play the role of a local navigation system: by receiving data on the position of the LED lamps, the mobile application will tell you how to find the right room in a large office building or get to the nearest conference room.
