What happens to vision if a person puts on glasses that flip the image?

The image of the outside world hits the retina upside down, and after that it is corrected by the brain, taking into account signals from other senses. In 1897, American psychologist George Stratton designed an invertoscope - glasses that inverted the image before light entered the eye. At first, the scientist was very disoriented, but after a few days he formed new visual-motor associations, and he was less and less aware that the world was turned upside down. When Stratton took off his glasses, his perception was again disturbed, but this time the adaptation to his usual vision was much faster.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Safe genetically modified mosquitoes 05.05.2021

Genetically modified mosquito larvae will be released on the Florida Keys in the southeastern United States. These are male insects, and they do not bite animals and people.

The experiment is part of a program to curb the spread of diseases such as dengue fever, Zika virus and yellow fever.

The mosquitoes will be released over the course of three weeks at six locations, bringing the total to hundreds of millions of larvae. Insects belong to the invasive species of yellow fever mosquitoes. However, they have a special gene that prevents offspring from surviving to adulthood. In this way, it will be possible to control the spread of insects that carry diseases.

These mosquitoes make up only 4% of the population of all mosquitoes in the Florida Keys, but they are the ones that spread dangerous viruses to people and can transmit deadly diseases to animals. Insects have become resistant to traditional methods of control, so new ways have to be found.
