What makes hair frizzy?

Hair is thin, thread-like growths that grow from the skin. There are different types of hair: thick and thin, long and short, white and colored. They can be straight, wavy and curly. The color and structure of the hair on the head is not the same in different peoples of the world. People in the countries of the East usually have straight hair. Negro hair is curly. And the hair of Caucasians, that is, representatives of the white race, can be different: straight, wavy and curly.

The color, curlyness and thickness of the hair we inherit from our parents. A person is born with hair of a certain structure and color. And in this structure there is something that determines whether the hair will be curly or not. Imagine that you cut across, as if it were tree trunks, two hairs: one straight, the other curly.

Looking at a section of a straight hair under a microscope, you can see that it is round. The cross section of curly hair will be oval or even flattened. The more this flattening, the easier the hair curls and the curlier it looks.

The color of human hair mainly depends on the content of a substance called melanin. Melanin is a pigment, that is, a coloring matter. It enters the hair cells when they form in the bulbs. The content of this substance determines whether the hair will be dark or light. As people age, less and less melanin ends up in the new hair cells. That is why they become gray-haired in old age, and then completely white.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

The brain can block the storage of certain memories 06.12.2021

Scientists from Zhejiang University in China conducted numerous experiments with different groups of volunteers. The hypothesis of the researchers was confirmed: the brain is able to block the storage of certain memories, even if a person tried to remember them.

It is logical to assume that the information that we specifically focus on at a certain point in time should be remembered better. However, as it turns out, this is not always the case. The subconscious mind is able to determine how much we need this or that information in the future, and if it turns out that the data is no longer needed, they will not be stored in memory.

During the experiment, scientists asked volunteers to look at various objects and focus on certain elements of them, ignoring others. For example, focus on color rather than shape. They were then asked about what they remembered. There were several similar experiments with people of different ages.

The results showed that the volunteers were more likely to get distracted by things they needed to ignore and forget about the things they were asked to focus on in order to remember them later. This allowed scientists to conclude that the subconscious filters the information that enters the brain in a special way - based on how much it may be needed in the future. The fact that in the future is not particularly useful in any way - the brain simply does not store in memory.

These findings, according to scientists, may be of practical importance - when working with people with post-traumatic stress disorder, for example, or with witnesses of crimes.
