How much does the atmosphere weigh?

The earth is surrounded by a thick layer of atmosphere. The earth's atmosphere consists of almost 20 gases. The two main gases are oxygen and nitrogen. It also contains water vapor and dust particles. Air is matter, and like any other kind of matter, it has weight. Weight is the amount of gravity acting on an object. When the scale on which the stone is placed shows 5 kilograms, this means that the force of gravity acting on the stone is 50 Newtons. In the same way, the Earth's gravity acts on every particle of gas and dust in the atmosphere. Since our atmosphere is a gigantic ocean of air, it carries considerable weight.

If it could be compressed and put on a scale, it would weigh about 5 tons! The air presses on us from all sides. Air pressure on our body is 171 ton. We do not feel this pressure because our body is used to it. Atmospheric pressure is highest at sea level, where it reaches 000 kg per sq. see It is the largest here, because these are the lowest layers of the atmosphere.

As the altitude increases, the pressure decreases. Therefore, space suits and cabins of aircraft flying at high altitude are made in such a way as to maintain the pressure to which the body is used to and what it needs. The Earth's atmosphere allows life to exist on Earth. This is the air we breathe. It protects us from excessive solar radiation, from excess heat and cold, and also has many other functions.

How have the rules of basketball been changed in North Korea?

In North Korea, according to Chinese media reports, basketball players play by heavily modified rules. So, for a productive slam dunk (throwing the ball on top of the ring), the player brings the team not 2, but 3 points. For a long-range shot, after which the ball flew into the basket without touching its edge - not 3, but 4. For missing a free kick, the team is minus a point. And all effective shots in the last three minutes of the match are evaluated immediately at 8 points.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

Social Network Threads 10.07.2023

Facebook Meta, the parent company of Instagram, is introducing a new service called Threads, which is a direct competitor to Twitter and offers similar functionality.

The chat app, called Threads, is already available for pre-order on the Apple App Store, but it won't be available for download until Thursday.

The description of the service states that Threads is a platform where people can come together and discuss everything from current excitement to upcoming trends.

The published screenshots show that Threads users will be able to post short text messages that, like Twitter, can be liked, commented on and shared with readers.

Twitter, for its part, is facing massive user churn after being acquired by billionaire Elon Musk, who laid off nearly half of the company's workforce and curtailed the rights of free account holders by insisting on signing up for the paid version of Twitter Blue.

The latest step in this direction has been to limit the number of tweets available to view for free accounts. TweetDeck, the popular Twitter control panel, is still available to all users, but Elon Musk promised to make it free within 30 days.

Judging by the screenshots of the new Threads app, the service will be completely free and will have no limits on the number of messages you can view.

Several Twitter-like apps have been launched over the past few years, such as Mastodon and Bluesky, but have failed to replicate its popularity.

Facebook Meta regularly borrows popular ideas from competitors. For example, the feature of disappearing messages after 24 hours (known as "Stories") first appeared on the Snapchat platform. It was subsequently copied by the developers of Instagram and then Facebook, and is the most popular feature in the Facebook Meta apps today.

According to the latest report, in the first quarter of this year, the total daily audience of all three Facebook Meta applications - Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp - was more than 3 billion people.
