What is olive oil?

Olive oil is obtained from olives that grow on an olive tree. This tree has the most interesting history of all plants on Earth. The ancient Greeks had a legend that the goddess Athena gave them an olive tree, after whom they named the city Athens. The borders of Greek possessions were marked with olive trees. This tree was for the ancient Greeks a symbol of freedom, hope, mercy, purity, order.

In ancient Greece, a wreath of olive branches was awarded to the winner of the Olympic Games. Olive oil has been extracted from olives and has been used for many purposes since ancient times. Until soap was invented, the wise Greeks and Romans had a habit of rubbing olive oil on their bodies.

In Mediterranean countries, it was used for cooking. In ancient times, oil was extracted from olives by grinding the fruit with large stone millstones. After grinding, the olive mass was folded into a cloth and pressed. Today this process is simplified and mechanized.

Modern millstones grind olives. Hydraulic presses squeeze out oil. It is then carefully filtered and purified to make it clear. Oil is obtained from 15 to 30 percent of the total weight of ripe olives. There was a time when, in some parts of the world, kings judged their wealth by the number of vessels filled with olive oil and stored in their warehouses.

How were the Hawaiian Islands formed?

Hawaii is the youngest state in the US. They consist of a group of islands in the Pacific Ocean, approximately 2400 miles southwest of California. The state includes eight large and many small islands and covers an area of approximately 6420 square miles. According to one Hawaiian legend, there was once a goddess of volcanoes named Pele, who created the islands. From time to time it returns to the craters on the islands and starts volcanic eruptions.

Interestingly, the Hawaiian Islands are actually the tops of huge volcanoes rising from the bottom of the ocean. For example, the island of Hawaii ("Big Island"), which is twice as large as all the other islands combined, was formed from five volcanoes, the emissions of which were layered on top of each other. Two of them are still active and continue the process of building the island.

One of these volcanoes, Mauna Loa, erupts every few years. In 1950, it erupted for 23 days and lava flowed into the sea. The water became very hot, and because of this, many fish died.

Another volcano, Mauna Kea, is dormant. It is the highest mountain in the Pacific Ocean. The volcano rises to 4200 meters above sea level, but its base goes to a depth of another 5840 meters. If measured from the underwater base, then this volcano can be considered the highest mountain in the world.

On the island of Maui there is a Haleakala volcano with a height of 3055 meters. It is the largest inactive volcano in the world. Its crater is about 20 miles across and 830 meters deep.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

Light pollution makes it difficult to see the stars 25.01.2023

Being able to observe cosmic events and view the full breadth of the stars of the universe from the comfort of your backyard is one of the oldest joys that skywatchers must contain. However, a new study suggests that the glow of the sky is becoming too bright, and light pollution obscures the stars. While scientists have found the best place on Earth to watch the stars, we don't have to move there just to see the sky in all its beauty.

The night sky is getting seven to ten times brighter every year as man-made light emission from the Earth continues to grow. In 2006, a project was launched to observe this growing sky glow, with researchers from Germany and the United States taking part.

The project is known as Globe at Night. This project is a public science project and recently a team of researchers analyzed over 50 observations made with the naked eye between 000 and 2011. Over this 2022-year period, the artificial light that fills our skies has grown significantly, making it difficult to study. see the stars.

But the glow of the sky is not just a problem for stargazers. It's also a problem for animals and the senses they rely on during their daily and seasonal cycles. This is especially harmful to diurnal and nocturnal animals, since it is more difficult for their sense organs to determine the time and work correctly.

Previously, changes in the glow of the sky filling our sky were not measured on a global scale. While satellites can measure light pollution, they don't have sensors with the sensitivity to provide accurate data, PopSci says. This is where public science projects like Globe at Night come into play. These researchers used naked eye observation to measure light pollution.

To help create accurate measurements, the Globe at Night researchers have put together a helpful chart detailing the differences between the wonderfully dark sky before the city and the sky inside the city. The differences are striking and it's a very clear reminder of just how much the aurora can affect the night sky when you look at it.

If the sky glare continues to be so rampant and it continues to snowball, eventually it will be impossible for people to go outside and enjoy the beauty of the dark night sky, studded with stars. Of course, we still have images from James Webb and other space telescopes, but they won't help the countless animal species that rely on stars and the night sky.
