Where was the first election held?

The word "election" comes from the Latin language, where it also means "to make a choice." In the elections, people felt that they had the right to choose their leader. And so it has been for millennia. The ancient Jews and Greeks fought for this right. The first kings of Israel, as well as generals in ancient Greece, were elected by vote.

The tradition of free elections was brought to England during the Anglo-Saxon conquests about 1500 years ago. Thus the right to vote for local officials became part of the English way of life and was carried over to America by the early colonizers. Even before the American Revolution, Americans voted in their town meetings and colonial assemblies. But in the issue of elections there was a big problem: who has the right to vote. At one time, only property owners were given the right to vote. Throughout history, there have been all sorts of restrictions that forbade voting, such as the size of a private household, for example.

For a very long time, a woman was deprived of the right to vote. Women's rights activists used every opportunity to bring this issue up for discussion. But even today, in some countries, women do not have the right to vote. Voting restrictions changed from time to time, and new categories of people were allowed to vote. Recently, the age limit has been reduced from 21 to 18 years.

How did the poet Johann Wolfgang Goethe influence the development of painting?

The German poet, thinker and naturalist Johann Wolfgang Goethe (1749-1832) at one time wanted to become an artist, but he lacked talent. He wrote a treatise "To the teacher of drawing", in which he foresaw the modern theory of colors. This book was translated into his native language by the English painter Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775-1851).

Goethe described how best to use the laws of color perception in painting. Turner recognized his point of view and used it in his work.

According to experts, it was under the influence of the ideas set forth in the book that Turner was able to convey in his canvases those subtle visual impressions that arise when light is reflected by water or viewed through rain, steam or fog. Some features in Turner's brushwork anticipated French Impressionism and Expressionism.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. The harm of music before bed 27.06.2021

Michael Scullin, professor of psychology and neuroscience at Baylor University, conducted a study on sleep patterns. In his work, Dr. Scullin studied the relationship between music indulgence before bed and the quality of sleep. The main topic for study was the phenomenon of "ear worms": obsessive repetitions of the same melody that "gets stuck" in our head and involuntarily scrolls through the brain over and over again.

Usually we can notice this during the daytime, but Dr. Scullin has proven that the same problem happens to us in our sleep. At the same time, the quality of sleep becomes worse and it does not bring the proper benefit to the body.

The scientist based his conclusions on experiments with volunteers, in which more than two hundred people participated, answering various questions about musical habits and sleep quality. All of these music lovers experienced earworm syndrome.

In addition, fifty volunteers were invited to conduct the experiment at the Neurobiology and Cognitive Research Laboratory at Baylor University. In all participants, scientists tried to induce the effect of "ear worms" in order to empirically evaluate their effect on the quality of sleep. At the same time, the activity of the brain, the work of the body and the quality of sleep were assessed using a polysomnograph.

It turned out that those who were used to listening to tunes and songs for the future to sleep in order to sleep better, constantly suffered from the phenomenon of "ear worms" and experienced problems with sleep. This refutes the common belief that music in the evening helps to fall asleep and sleep better. The brain, even during sleep, does not stop analyzing the data obtained while listening to music, which reduces the quality of rest.
