What does the neural network see?

05.03.2019

Open AI and Google have created a new tool called Activation Atlases to visualize interactions between neurons in AI systems. It allows you to penetrate into the "consciousness" of the machine in order to better understand the internal decision-making processes of artificial intelligence, as well as to identify their errors and shortcomings. Activation Atlases is built around the capability visualization method. It provides an insight into what the hidden layers of neural networks are, which in turn make machine learning more accessible and interpretable. In other words, it allows researchers to analyze how individual algorithms work, understanding how they combine various abstract elements to identify specific objects.

Activation Atlases will finally help answer the question of what the neural network actually sees. Similar studies have been done before, but then it was like identifying individual letters in the visual alphabet of algorithms. The new study is closer to the whole dictionary, it explains how these letters are combined into words. One of the authors of the work compares Activation Atlases with a microscope for neural networks.

Open AI believes that this technology can detect unforeseen problems in neural networks, for example, in places where the network relies on spurious correlations in image classification (where algorithms could confuse dark-skinned people with gorillas), or when reusing a function leads to strange mistakes.

Activation Atlases uses a well-known neural network called GoogLeNet or InceptionV1, which is trained on images from the ImageNet database. It processes data through about ten layers of hundreds of neurons. In turn, each neuron fires to a different extent on different types of images. The researchers traced this process and found out exactly which elements of the images evoke a response from the system.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Innovative wind generator without blades 13.03.2015

Dutch Windwheel Corporation is going to build an innovative wind farm Dutch Windwheel in Rotterdam (Holland). Its peculiarity lies in the fact that the design will not have blades or any other moving parts, and electricity will be generated using charged water droplets.

The operation of the power plant will be based on the EWICON technology recently developed at the Delft Institute of Technology (Electrostatic WInd energy CONverter - "Electrostatic Wind Energy Converter"). The innovative windmill will generate electricity without infrasound radiation and without huge mechanical moving parts.

The design is a steel frame that holds several braided tubes arranged horizontally. Each tube contains several electrodes and nozzles, which, under the influence of wind, release positively charged water droplets into the air. As soon as the droplets fly out of the turbine, the voltage changes in the device, and it begins to generate an electric field. The resulting electrical energy can be used for daily needs. In this case, water will be extracted from the soil, which around the innovative "water mill" will be swampy, including due to rain that will flow down the outer bends of the rings.

The innovative power plant is expected to become one of the main attractions of Rotterdam. And if the scheme turns out to be really successful, it is possible that similar ones will be built in other cities and countries. The timing of the project has not yet been announced.

It should be noted that traditional windmills have significant drawbacks. Rotating blades require constant maintenance, as they wear out rather quickly, and the whole structure can make a loud noise. In addition, wind turbines harm the environment: birds and bats do not understand the danger posed by giant rotating blades and die. And EWICON, unlike other wind generators, is quite compact and can be installed directly on buildings.
