What is lipstick?

Like many cosmetics used today, various types of lipstick are developed in chemical laboratories. Each component included in its composition has a specific purpose, and their combination is described by a very complex formula. The main components of lipstick are castor oil and various wax ointments. Cocoa butter, lanolin, mineral oils, petroleum jelly and other chemicals are also added there.

The coloring matter that gives lipstick a certain color, of course, is also an important component. Oils and waxes are fused together and paint is rubbed into the mixture. Then the whole mass is melted again and poured into molds, where it hardens. Lipstick is made in such a way that when it is touched to the lips, it softens, making it possible to apply it on the lips in an even layer. Women have been using cosmetics since time immemorial. Perhaps the birthplace of cosmetics is the East, and in ancient times this art flourished in Egypt. There, various types of cosmetics were used already six thousand years ago.

Under Cleopatra, the art of cosmetics received a new upsurge. In those days, the focus was on the eyes. At the court of the queen, women lined their eyes with green, and painted their eyelids, eyelashes and eyebrows black. Nails, palms of hands and feet were painted with henna. The Bible mentions the use of cosmetics by women many times. For example, when Jehu arrived at Jezreel, Jezebel heard about it and put on make-up on her face...

In Rome during the time of Nero, cosmetics and perfumes were used very widely. Some of the cosmetics already in existence at that time are lead white and chalk to lighten the skin, eye shadow and eyelash dye, cheek rouge and lip paint (a sort of forerunner of our lipstick), barley flour and oil in as a therapeutic facial mask and a pumice stone for brushing your teeth. They also had a soap composition for lightening hair.

In England, about four hundred years ago, women took all kinds of baths to improve their skin. It is said that Queen of Scots Mary Stuart bathed in wine, and other women in those days took milk baths.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. Oil and gas flares are more dangerous than thought 10.10.2022

Experts from the USA studied the impact of oil and gas flares on the environment. The methane produced as a result of the operation of installations greatly harms the environment around the world.

According to oil and gas companies, flares burn 98% of the natural gas emitted. But observations of three US oil and gas fields show that the efficiency is only about 91%.

The natural gas leak is mostly methane. This greenhouse gas lingers in the atmosphere for only nine to 80 years, but its warming potential is 98 times that of carbon dioxide. So oil and gas companies are lighting flares by burning methane to produce less potent carbon dioxide and water. Industry and the US government assumed that these flares operated at XNUMX% efficiency. Previous research has shown that this may be overly optimistic.

Genevieve Plante, an atmospheric scientist at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, and her colleagues sent aircraft to take air samples from more than 300 flares in the Bakken Basin in North Dakota, as well as in the Permian and Eagle Ford Basins in Texas, which accounts for more than 80 percent of flaring in the US. The samples showed five times more unburned methane than previously thought.

The drop in efficiency from 98% to 91% may seem small, but the implications are significant. Any percentage that is in the methane phase instead of the CO 2 phase is significantly more problematic.
