Which monarch was found tattooed with the inscription: Death to kings!?

Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte began his career as a simple soldier in the French royal army. During the revolution, he quickly advanced to division commander, and under Napoleon became a marshal. The next step was an invitation to the successors to the Swedish king, and in 1818 Bernadotte officially took the Swedish throne under the name of Charles XIV Johan, and the Bernadotte dynasty still remains ruling. In 1844, he died, and during preparations for embalming, a tattoo was found on Bernadotte's arm: "Death to kings!".

Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

Were there pirates in antiquity?

Not far from the banks of the Nile, an ancient landmark has survived to this day - the temple of Queen Hatshepsut, built one and a half thousand years BC. Hatshepsut, daughter of Thutmose I, was officially proclaimed pharaoh of Egypt as a result of a series of palace intrigues.

The inscriptions preserved on the walls of the Hatshepsut temple tell in detail about the deeds of the female pharaoh. One of them tells of a naval expedition to the country of Punt, which took place around 1490 BC, at her command. This country was located on the coast of the Gulf of Aden and occupied part of the Somali peninsula.

Ancient texts tell in detail how five Egyptian ships entered the Red Sea and, keeping along the coast, moved south. There were many soldiers on the ships. When the Egyptians reached the country of Punt, they were greeted by the locals as messengers of the gods descended from heaven.

The Egyptians, in response, declared the lord of Punt the subjects of the female pharaoh and imposed a huge tribute - they took incense, ivory, leopard skins, livestock, monkeys. The Egyptians, in addition, recruited "native inhabitants along with their children" on their ships. In a word, the sea expedition, equipped by Queen Hatshepsut to the country of Punt, was a real pirate raid. True, in fairness it should be said that the Egyptians themselves suffered severely from the pirate raids of other peoples.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

Water on asteroids 20.02.2024

NASA's SOFIA flying observatory, installed on a Boeing 747SP aircraft, ceased operation a year and a half ago, but the data it collected continues to benefit the scientific community. Using information collected by an infrared telescope, a team of scientists has discovered for the first time the presence of water on rocky asteroids in the solar system. These discoveries will form the basis for further research into the evolution of planets and the origin of life on Earth.

The discovery of water on asteroids opens new horizons for our understanding of the origin and development of life in the Universe. SOFIA's research results inspire further discoveries and encourage the use of new technologies, such as the Webb Telescope, to further explore space.

Several years ago, SOFIA, which regularly ascended into the stratosphere, allowed one of the teams of scientists to detect water molecules in one of the craters at the south pole of the Moon. The data showed a water content of 355 ml/m3, chemically bound to minerals and clearly detected in the infrared spectrum.

Using this experience, scientists decided to study the water on four rocky asteroids between Mars and Jupiter: Iris, Partenope, Melpomene and Masalia. Water molecules were detected on Iris and Masalia, while signals from Parthenope and Melpomene were mixed.

The discovery of water on rocky asteroids indicates their role in enriching planets with water and opens new perspectives for understanding the processes of formation of conditions for the emergence of life. The findings will help expand our knowledge of the distribution of water in planetary systems and guide the search for life beyond Earth.
