Do any birds hibernate in the winter?

When the winter cold comes, we can close ourselves in our house, light a fire in the fireplace and sit by it until we feel like going outside. Although we are warm-blooded animals, we cannot hibernate. And if a person were capable of this, do you think he could not live longer, surviving the cold in this way? Birds, alas, also cannot hibernate. But still they are able to tolerate very low temperatures. Even a small canary, which may live in your cage, can tolerate outdoor temperatures down to minus forty-five degrees Celsius, if, of course, it has something to peck in sufficient quantities.

Birds that are able to get their own food and do not fly away to warm countries for the winter do not need hibernation. Falling into hibernation is determined by a special temperature-regulatory center in the brain. The body reacts to cold by sending the blood in the skin to the internal organs of the body, ruffling the fur or feathers to increase the heat-retaining layer, causing the animals to shiver, which also contributes to warmth. Hibernating animals simply "turn off" this thermostat in their bodies when it's time to fall asleep for the winter. They become almost cold-blooded animals. This process is caused by a decrease in external temperature, a lack of food, a shortening of the day, and other conditions.

When an animal goes into hibernation, its temperature regulator begins to falter: when the body temperature drops, it will not respond to it in the same way as in the normal state, with an increase in temperature. Instead, body temperature is brought into line with air temperature. Breathing becomes slow and irregular, like the heartbeat itself, and various nervous reflexes cease to function altogether.

If the air temperature drops below zero, some hibernating animals begin to breathe faster, and the body generates a little more heat. Some of them wake up. Those that do not react at all to a sharp drop in temperature can freeze to death.

How did Paris manage to kidnap Helen?

Soon after the return of Paris to the royal family, his father - no doubt under the influence of Aphrodite - sent him on an embassy to Sparta. A fleet was built specifically for this, and the bow of the main ship was decorated with the figure of Aphrodite holding little Eros in her hands. When the ships went to sea, Aphrodite sent them a favorable wind, and soon Paris was already in Sparta, where King Menelaus arranged a feast in honor of the guest, which lasted for nine whole days.

At the feast, Paris pleased Helen with rich gifts from Troy, and his frank glances, loud sighs and bold signs of attention plunged her into confusion. Menelaus, who was not very observant, left his wife to entertain the guests and rule the kingdom in his absence, and he himself calmly sailed to Crete, for the funeral of his grandfather. On the very first night after the departure of her husband, Helen fled with Paris and became his beloved as soon as they went ashore. Perhaps those who claim that Elena rejected the courtship of Paris and he took her away by force are going against the truth.

In Sparta, Helena left her nine-year-old daughter Hermione, but did not forget to take most of the palace treasures and slaves. Upon arrival at home, Paris celebrated the wedding. Helen won the sympathy of the Trojans, struck by her divine beauty, despite the disasters that she brought to their city.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

Canon cameras will be assembled by robots 23.05.2012

By 2015, Canon plans to completely eliminate manual operations in its camera assembly plants. The company announced its intention to completely get rid of manual labor on its assembly lines, reports Associated Press.

It is planned to fully robotize the assembly of cameras, according to a spokesman for the company, Jun Misumi, within a few years. He refused to name the exact date, but called 2015 likely.

The purpose of this project is to reduce operating costs. Canon did not say how much savings they intend to achieve. The representative of the company added that they are not going to reduce staff - employees who will be exempted from manual operations will perform other duties in the company. Canon has already partially automated production, but people are still an integral part of it. The company is convinced that over time, robots will be able to independently produce some types of products, without human participation. The company did not indicate which products are in question.

Another Japanese company, Toyota Motor, is also working on fully automating assembly lines, not only to save money but also to produce higher quality vehicles, AP adds. The agency notes that new technologies, in particular, are used to assemble Lexus cars.

Canon is the largest camera manufacturer in the world. According to IDC, in 2010 the vendor owned 19% of the global market. In second place is Sony with a share of 16,9%, in third place is Nikon with a share of 12%. At the end of 2010 the volume of world deliveries reached 141 million devices, 10% more in comparison with 2009. Results of a research for 2011 the IDC company in open did not publish.

Revenue of Canon at the end of 2011 financial year which came to the end on December 31, 2011 decreased by 4% in comparison with the previous year to 3,56 trillion yens ($46,4 billion). Net profit remained virtually unchanged at 248,6 billion ($3,2 billion) yen compared to 246,6 billion yen in 2010. Like other manufacturers, including Nikon, the company suffered losses as a result of last year's floods in Thailand. The results were also influenced by the earthquake in Japan. According to the annual report, both disasters resulted in a decline in revenue of approximately 230 billion yen and operating income of approximately 120 billion yen.

In 2012, Canon does not expect a significant improvement in financial performance. Revenue growth is projected at 5,4%. Profit is expected to be at the same level as last year. Own forecast for the current year turned out to be lower than the forecast of independent analysts.
