How many types of bats exist in nature?

There are an unusually large number of different types of bats, about a thousand. They live in almost all corners of our earth, except for the polar regions. All types of bats differ in their habits depending on their habitat. And yet, despite all the differences, they have a lot in common. Bats usually live in colonies, but do not build dwellings for themselves. They usually live in caves. Some caves can be inhabited by colonies of thousands of bats. But they can also settle in small colonies, numbering only ten or twelve individuals, somewhere in the hollow of a tree.

Some species of bats prefer to live in trees, hanging from branches and twigs like leaves. Two species of tropical bats make small canopies out of palm leaves. In Australia, mice live on fruit trees, in Egypt - in the pyramids. In North America and Europe, they often settle under the same roof with a person, crawling through narrow cracks and settling in attics.

Although most bats are active only at night, there are some that fly in broad daylight. Most bats feed only on insects, some only on fruit, and others on both fruit and insects. And there are those that eat meat, fish and even flower nectar. In India, there is one species of bat that feeds on mice, birds and lizards.

A large pointed-nosed bat from tropical America can eat almost anything in captivity: bananas, horsemeat, liver. They will not abandon even their smaller relatives. In the tropics there are bats whose "diet" is very unusual. For example, mice of the noctilio species living in North and Central America feed on fish. And one of the species of bats living in the jungles of South America mainly feeds on pollen and nectar from flowers.

And, of course, many have heard of a bat called a vampire that lives in North and Central America. She bites horses, cows, goats and even people, sucks out a small amount of blood and flies away.

Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

Why do some people have allergies and others don't?

To be allergic means to be susceptible or sensitive to the effects of one or more substances. It can be food, chemical, plant and animal products, and even house dust or dander of cats, dogs, horses.

Substances that cause an allergic reaction are called allergens. So why do they affect some and not others? Medicine has yet to explain it. Many doctors and scientists think that heredity plays a big role in this. There are whole families in which grandparents, father and mother, their children - all suffer from the same allergy.

On the other hand, there are families where only one member is sensitive to some substances. It is assumed that emotions play an important role in the development of the disease. For unknown reasons, fear, rage, and anxiety can lead to allergy attacks.

What happens in the body of such a person? It is believed that certain substances, when they enter the body, cause certain cells to produce chemicals called antibodies. They perform the main protective function against infections. But with allergies, unexpectedly lead to very unpleasant consequences.

It is believed that the allergen combines with its antibody and produces histamine. It affects the blood vessels and lungs, causing allergic reactions. But it is produced either very little, or it is localized only in certain parts of the body, because so far it has not been found in the blood of a person suffering from a disease.

So you can see how much there is to be learned about allergies, this phenomenon that brings misfortune to so many people.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>
