How many types of fish live on the planet?

There were no people on earth when the first fish swam on the waters of the ocean. There were not even dinosaurs then, not to mention elephants or any other highly organized living creatures. The first vertebrate animal on earth was the fish. Fish, like all other creatures that have lived on Earth since time immemorial, have undergone many changes in the process of evolution.

Now in the world of different species of fish lives more than any other vertebrate animals. There are at least XNUMX varieties of fish living in all kinds of water bodies, from mountain streams and small ponds to the deep ocean.

Fish are divided into three main classes. The first is cartilaginous fish, such as shark, stingray and ray fish. Instead of a bony skeleton, they have a cartilaginous one, made of a strong and elastic substance. Often, instead of scales, their body is covered with keratinized skin.

The second type is bony fish, which include the largest number of fish living today. Fish of this type have a bony skeleton and are covered with scales.

The third group is lungfish, that is, fish that have both gills and lungs. All lungfish live in fresh water. Their fins are slightly limb-like, and they sometimes make their way onto land. A typical example is the "climbing perch" living in India. But most fish breathe with gills, which are constantly bathed in water passing through their mouths.

Fish have cold blood, but they have a nervous system and, like other animals, they can experience pain and other unpleasant sensations.

Fish have a very fine sense of touch, and they touch as well as taste with their scaled skin. For smell, however, they have special organs located in small nostrils on their heads. They also have internal organs of hearing, that is, located inside the body.

Some fish are true vagrants and do not have a fixed place of residence, but mostly live in small communities, just like land animals. Almost all fish are predators, that is, they feed on other fish or aquatic animals and insects.

Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

Who played a key role in the popularization of champagne?

Many consider the French monk Pierre Dom Perignon to be the inventor of champagne, but this is far from the truth. He developed many techniques that are still used by champagne producers in the process of making initial wine, but he considered bubbles in wine to be a sign of marriage. And the British played a key role in the popularization of bubbling wine. They imported wines from the Champagne region, and then poured them from barrels into bottles with a cork stopper (which the French did not know then). After the resumption of the fermentation process, carbon dioxide began to form in the bottles, and the wine in open bottles bubbled, which the British liked very much.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

Qi technology for wireless battery charging 08.08.2014

The Wireless Power Consortium has released version Qi v.1.2 of the standard for wireless mobile device charging.

Qi technology allows you to transfer energy to gadgets according to the principle of magnetic induction. The basic charger consists of an induction coil that generates an electromagnetic field when AC current is applied. The recipient gadget contains a similar coil capable of capturing this field, converting the received energy into direct current. As a result, the battery is charged.

The Qi v.1.2 standard provides support for the resonant wireless charging method. This means that rechargeable gadgets do not have to be in contact with the surface of the base station. Energy transfer is possible at a distance of up to 45 mm. Thus, the charger can be integrated into, say, the top of a computer desk or into the stowage compartment of a car panel.

The Wireless Power Consortium notes that there are already prototype charging stations that provide power transmission wirelessly at 40-50 mm. The new standard is backward compatible with Qi v1.1. This allows existing Qi-enabled devices to also use the remote charging function, but the range in this case will be limited to 30 mm.
