A person who has the plague develops a fever, shivering, and tumors appear in the groin. Spots appear on the skin. Due to the fact that these spots were dark in color and many people died from this disease, the plague was called the Black Death in the Middle Ages. In English, the name of this disease is sometimes used in relation to any dangerous epidemic. One of the worst plagues in human history broke out in the fourteenth century. It began in Central Asia, reached the shores of the Black Sea, then was transported to European ports and spread throughout the continent in five years. Various precautions were taken to prevent the spread of the plague. People were isolated in their homes, forbidding them to leave. No one had the right to visit them, and special people brought them food. When a plague patient died, all his property was burned. The bubonic plague returned to Europe in the XNUMXth century. Almost half of the population of the French city of Lyon has died. About eighty-six thousand people died in Milan, and almost five hundred thousand in the Venetian Republic.
