Why do we celebrate New Year's?

Meeting the New Year is one of the oldest customs in the world. When did it start? Some believe that the Chinese were the first to celebrate this holiday, others attribute it to the ancient Germans, and still others believe that it was the Romans. We know that the Chinese always arrange on the occasion of the New Year, which comes later for them, which is why we have big celebrations that go on for several days.

The ancient Germans established the celebration of the New Year because of the change of seasons. Winter for the Germans began around mid-November. At this time they were harvesting. Since at this time everyone gathered together and since after the harvest they could take a break from work, they arranged a merry holiday on this occasion. Even though it was only November, they considered it the beginning of a new year!

When the Romans conquered Europe, they moved the time of the holiday to the first of January. For them, the onset of the New Year was a symbol of the beginning of a new life and hope for the future. The custom of celebrating the New Year and the significance of this holiday have remained unchanged to this day. We joyfully meet the New Year and hope that it will bring with it a good new life!

Which writer manipulated the results of a psychological test in order to escape from prison?

When the American writer and psychologist Timothy Leary was convicted of drug possession, he was offered a standard test that Leary himself had developed a few years ago to determine where he was incarcerated. He filled out the test in such a way that his type was determined to be the most suitable for gardening and field work. Based on the results, Leary was assigned to work as a gardener in a soft-security prison, from which he escaped six months later.

Latest news of science and technology, new electronics:

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

Computer mice can detect emotional stress 30.04.2016

The Japanese company Alps Electric presented a miniature sensor for determining the level of hemoglobin in the blood and the degree of saturation with oxygen. The analysis of these blood parameters can prevent a number of diseases and the deterioration of human health. What is important, the analysis is carried out without taking blood samples - by remote spectroscopy. This opens the way for new sensors to wearable electronics such as smartphones, fitness bracelets or smartwatches.

The Alps Electric sensor is built into the mouse. The sensor is located under the thumb and constantly monitors the level of hemoglobin and its saturation with oxygen. For this, two LED lasers in the near infrared range are used, but with different wavelengths. One laser determines the level of hemoglobin saturated with oxygen (oxyhemoglobin), and the second one without oxygen (deoxyhemoglobin).

In addition, sensors for temperature and humidity of the environment are built into the mouse (and you also need a meter for the level of carbon dioxide in the air - this is an important parameter that affects human performance). The combination of indications is displayed on the display of a conventional computer and allows you to study the history of changes in the user's state of health. This is easier and more effective than specifically conducting research, which you still need to force yourself to do.

Apple CareKit is one of the possible implementations of monitoring the user's health indicators using a smartphone.

During this year, this development by Alps Electric will be brought to perfection. Starting next spring, the company promises to start sending samples of sensors for hemoglobin analysis to all interested customers. It should be expected that development will appear in commercial products towards the end of 2017 or in 2018.
