What is papyrus?

The first material that could be written on was made from a plant called papyrus. This invention was made by the Egyptians around 2000 BC. e. For about two and a half millennia, papyrus was the only material for writing.

Papyrus is a reed plant that belongs to the sedge family. It reaches a height of 1 to 3 meters. Its stems are soft, and their thickness sometimes reaches the thickness of a human hand. At the tops of the stems are hanging thin shoots resembling tangled coarse hair. The papyrus leaves are small and the roots are strong. The Roman historian Pliny left a description of how papyrus was made. The papyrus stems were cut into pieces and straightened out. The widest and most valuable part was the middle.

These strips were stacked one to another. Across, at a right angle, other strips were laid. These layers were then glued together with muddy water from the Nile or wheat flour glue. The sheets thus obtained were smoothed or rolled out and dried in the sun. At one time, papyrus was one of the main Egyptian goods.

For many centuries, all diplomatic documents were written on papyrus, until parchment was invented. Each sheet was marked with a stamp confirming its quality. Baskets were still woven from thin shoots of papyrus. Mats and sails were made from thicker stems, the boiled core of this cane was used as food for the poor, and when dried, it was used as fuel. Thus, you were convinced how useful this plant was in antiquity.

Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

Why did projects for diversion of northern rivers to the Volga appear and then disappear?

One of the features of the Caspian Sea is the strong fluctuations in the water level in it. When the Aral Sea began to dry up in the 1960s, it was noticed that the level of the Caspian Sea was also dropping. This was evident in the expansion of the coastal strip and the appearance of large new beaches. They sounded the alarm: it is necessary to save the sea. It was then that the notorious projects of transferring the northern rivers to the Volga sounded.

While the reasons were being discussed, while projects for diverting rivers were being clarified and rejected, time passed. In 1978, they were surprised to notice that the level of the Caspian began to rise. At first, the sea ate the beaches and flooded the newly built boarding houses near Makhachkala on the low flat part of the coast, then it moved closer to the railway. Now it was no longer necessary to save the Caspian Sea, but to save people from it. But in 1995, the water level in the Caspian Sea suddenly stopped rising. Everything has stabilized.

The need to transfer the northern rivers to the Volga has disappeared. How long?

A New Way to Control and Manipulate Optical Signals 05.05.2024

The modern world of science and technology is developing rapidly, and every day new methods and technologies appear that open up new prospects for us in various fields. One such innovation is the development by German scientists of a new way to control optical signals, which could lead to significant progress in the field of photonics. Recent research has allowed German scientists to create a tunable waveplate inside a fused silica waveguide. This method, based on the use of a liquid crystal layer, allows one to effectively change the polarization of light passing through a waveguide. This technological breakthrough opens up new prospects for the development of compact and efficient photonic devices capable of processing large volumes of data. The electro-optical control of polarization provided by the new method could provide the basis for a new class of integrated photonic devices. This opens up great opportunities for ... >>

Primium Seneca keyboard 05.05.2024

Keyboards are an integral part of our daily computer work. However, one of the main problems that users face is noise, especially in the case of premium models. The world's tallest astronomical observatory opened 04.05.2024

Exploring space and its mysteries is a task that attracts the attention of astronomers from all over the world. In the fresh air of the high mountains, far from city light pollution, the stars and planets reveal their secrets with greater clarity. A new page is opening in the history of astronomy with the opening of the world's highest astronomical observatory - the Atacama Observatory of the University of Tokyo. The Atacama Observatory, located at an altitude of 5640 meters above sea level, opens up new opportunities for astronomers in the study of space. This site has become the highest location for a ground-based telescope, providing researchers with a unique tool for studying infrared waves in the Universe. Although the high altitude location provides clearer skies and less interference from the atmosphere, building an observatory on a high mountain poses enormous difficulties and challenges. However, despite the difficulties, the new observatory opens up broad research prospects for astronomers. ... >>

Adata SR1010 Solid State Drive 08.10.2014

Adata Technology, a global manufacturer of high-speed RAM modules and NAND flash devices, has introduced the SR1010 enterprise-class server SSD. The novelty supports comprehensive data encryption, is characterized by security, high performance and compatibility with various operating systems. The Adata SR1010 drive is available in 100 GB, 240 GB and 480 GB capacities and is the optimal solution for upgrading production servers, data centers and embedded devices, Adata told CNews.

For servers and data centers, sudden system failure means countless damage and loss of vital information. Commercial servers need a strong mechanism to protect against such scenarios. With PLP (Power-Loss Protection) technology, Adata SR1010 helps prevent catastrophic data loss caused by system failures - power outages or failure of data center backup generators. In addition, the drive supports SMART drive health monitoring technology to help ensure data integrity and improve drive performance, the company says.

The SR1010 SSD is TCG Opal 2.0 and IEEE 1667 compliant, making it the best choice for companies that use CMS (Central Management Software) as part of their data protection policy. In addition, the new product complies with the Microsoft eDrive standard, which helps prevent data leakage by completely deleting all information when the drive is reused. The novelty is a self-encrypting drive (Self-Encrypting Drive) and provides an affordable way to secure data stored in data centers, indicated in Adata.

The Adata SR1010 SSD is compatible with Linux operating systems such as SUSE Enterprise and Red Hat Enterprise, VMware and Citrix virtual machine technologies, and is Microsoft WHQL certified. In addition, it uses NAND Flash technology. The combination of these factors allows the SR1010 drives to provide wide compatibility and stability. Using Seagate SF2581 controllers with sequential read/write speeds up to 550/550 MB/s, you can achieve random read/write speeds of 4K blocks up to 73K/45K operations per second. In addition, according to Adata, the device has an MTBF of up to 2 million hours.

Adata SR1010 Enterprise SSDs come with a 5-year full warranty.
