HTRANS is an unusual translucent concrete designed by Polytechnic University of Valencia (UPV) researchers José Ramón Albiol Ibanez and Miguel Sánchez López

Thanks to this material, architects will be able to create 3D structures, where transparent resin is used as the "ink". According to Jose Ibanez, it will also be possible to integrate LED backlighting into these fragments.

HTRANS is still handmade, so its final price remains high. It is assumed that its strength will be strengthened by reinforcing elements of various thicknesses. Rechargeable batteries or wireless chargers are used as power sources for lighting inside the units.

Speaking about the future of the unique material, the developers suggest using it to create design objects - lamps, decorative elements, kitchen furniture, countertops, flooring, facades.

Oxygen ion battery 19.05.2023

Lithium-ion batteries, while commonplace in the modern world and powering everything from electric vehicles to smartphones, are not necessarily the best solution for all applications. Researchers at the Technical University of Vienna have made a breakthrough by creating an oxygen-ion battery that has several significant advantages. While the battery may not match the energy density of Lithium-Ion batteries, its capacity does not permanently decrease over time, allowing the battery to last for a very long time.

The manufacture of oxygen-ion batteries does not need scarce elements and uses non-combustible materials. The innovative battery concept has already led to a patent application filed in cooperation with partners in Spain. These oxygen-ion batteries could be an outstanding solution for large-scale energy storage systems such as those required to store electricity from renewable sources.

The ceramic materials being studied by the TU Wien team can absorb and release doubly negatively charged oxygen ions. When an electrical voltage is applied, oxygen ions migrate from one ceramic material to another, after which they can be made to migrate back, thus generating an electrical current.

The biggest advantage of the new battery technology is its potential longevity: "In many batteries you have the problem that at some point the charge carriers can no longer move," says Alexander Schmid. Then they can no longer be used to generate electricity, the battery capacity decreases. After many charge cycles, this can be a serious problem."

An oxygen-ion battery, however, can be regenerated without any problems: if oxygen is lost due to side reactions, then the loss can simply be compensated for by oxygen from the surrounding air.
