What is a weevil?

Around us, without stopping, there is a constant war between man and insects. Some insects are just parasites that spread infection, and some are in the business of destroying what a person is trying to grow. If there is any family of insects that humanity can do without, then these are weevils (they are also called elephants).

Despite the fact that weevils represent only a subclass of insects, their family is the most numerous in the animal kingdom with more than 35 species, and, apparently, most species of weevils have not yet been discovered and described by scientists!

Weevils vary greatly in shape, size and color. Usually these small insects are easily recognizable by their proboscis-like or knife-blade protrusions on their heads. At the end of these protrusions is the mouth. The females use their proboscises to drill holes into which eggs will be laid. Elephant larvae usually look like fat white worms and, like adults, eat various plants with a good appetite.

Weevils are considered so harmful not because of exorbitant appetite or large numbers of individuals in the colony. The thing is that they damage the vital and most delicate parts of plants: buds, fruits, seeds, young shoots, etc. Thus, after visiting the weevil, the plant can only die.

The barn weevil, which destroys various crops, is one of the most harmful representatives of its family. And the rice weevil destroys not only rice, but also other dry foods.

The most dangerous enemy of cotton crops is the cotton weevil, which can destroy the entire crop. So you can see for yourself how harmful the weevil is to humans.

 Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

Why are the words bull and bee the same root?

The words bull and bee are the same root. The fact is that in the works of ancient Russian literature the word bee was written as "bechela". The alternation of vowels ъ / ы is explained by the origin of both sounds from the same Indo-European sound U. If we recall the dialect verb to roar, buzz, buzz and is etymologically related to the words bee, insect and bull, it becomes clear what was the common meaning of these nouns - producing a certain sound.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

Quasi-resonant controllers Infineon CoolSET 02.10.2020

Infineon has introduced new quasi-resonant PWM flyback controllers as part of the fifth generation CoolSET family. PWM controllers are optimized for industrial switching power supplies (SMPS) and are great for use in telecom applications, server power systems, personal computers, home appliances and more.

Newer models, such as the ICE5QSBG, are designed to be used with high-voltage MOSFETs, but the company also offers hybrid solutions (ICE5QR2280BG, ICE5QR4780BG, ICE5QR1680BG, and ICE5QR0680BG) with built-in CoolMOS P7 super-junction transistors. PWM controllers are supplied in compact PG-DSO-8 and DSO-12 packages and do not require any special cooling systems.

Features:

Availability of combined solutions with built-in MOSFETs CoolMOS P7 800 V, made using super-junction technology;
Complex of protections: from input overvoltage, from supply voltage failures (brown-in/-out), from ground fault, from overheating;
Quasi-resonant switching circuit to minimize PWM switching frequency spread;
Fast startup when using a cascade connection with a high voltage MOSFET.

Areas of use:

Auxiliary power supplies for household appliances, telecommunications applications, servers, personal computers, etc.;
Large home appliances;
Power adapters.
