Where do termites live?

Many people confuse termites with ants. Although both termites and ants are social insects, they are quite different. Termites have thick waists and smooth, curved antennae, or antennae. The body of a termite is usually white.

Termites are found throughout the United States and southern Canada. In Europe, they are found in the south of the mainland up to Paris and Vienna. But most termites live in rainy tropical areas.

Usually termites live in forests, eating trees. Termite dwellings are built from a durable cement-like mass, which is obtained from wood processed in the intestines of termites. This material allows you to keep moist air inside the termite mound. Termite mounds can reach 9 m in height and 15 m in width.

Some termites make basketball-sized nests in trees. These nests protect termites from ants, birds, lizards and spiders. Some African termite nests have umbrella-shaped roofs to keep rain out, and some are built to keep the temperature inside constant.

The construction of termite dwellings is a prime example of working on the basis of instinct alone. The nest is built by new workers who were born in the colony, never lived where their parents came from, and therefore had no opportunity to learn anything from other termites. But when the mound is built, it looks exactly like the one where the king and queen of the new mound came from.

There are three types of termites in the United States: some live in rocks, others in wood, and others in the ground under the canopy of the forest.

Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

Where did bananas originate?

Bananas are the oldest fruits known in history. The most ancient people knew bananas and admired them. It is believed that bananas originally grew in South Asia, and over the centuries spread to the west and east. The Muslims called the banana palm the tree of paradise, while the Hindus deified bananas.

At the beginning of the XNUMXth century, the priest Thomas de Berlanga brought banana roots to the New World. He hoped to win friendship with the Indians with this sweet, golden fruit and thus convert them to his faith. From these little roots grew a whole banana plantation of thousands of acres, which still exists in the tropical region of America!

The Indians found a variety of uses for bananas. They fry them while the bananas are green, eat them instead of bread. They boil them like vegetables, stew them, dry them like berries, and even make a strong alcoholic drink out of them! Although we say that bananas grow on a tree, it is actually not a tree, but a bush. It is probably the largest shrub in existence without a tree trunk. The stem, which reaches 3,5 to 9 meters and looks like a real tree trunk, is actually a mass of tough leaves.

The most developed banana varieties have lost the ability to produce seeds, which is much more convenient for eating. At the top of the plant is a huge tuft of hanging leaves, bright green in color. It is they that resemble a palm tree, make a banana look like a palm tree. One large flower bud grows in the middle of the trunk. And at the right time, it is on it that fruits appear. Since bananas grow in heavy bunches, the stem of the bush bends down.

It turns out that bananas grow upside down. Each bush grows one bunch of bananas, but its weight often reaches 45 kilograms or more! Bananas are always harvested while they are green, even when they are not going to be sent somewhere far away for sale. The reason is that if they are allowed to ripen on the tree, they burst and spoil before they are plucked. Bananas are transported on special ships built to transport bananas. They must be ventilated with a stream of cold air so that the fruits do not ripen during transport.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

Identification by electronic activity of the brain 24.04.2016

American scientists have described a method for identifying people by their "brain imprint" - a unique response to certain stimuli. The CEREBRE method has shown 100% accuracy in determining the identity and in the future can be used to create reliable protection systems.

During the experiments, the researchers developed a Cognitive Event-RElated Biometric REcognition (CEREBRE) protocol. He involved the processing of brain signals associated with the activity of several systems: for example, the primary visual response, face recognition and response to taste stimuli. The study involved 50 volunteers, each of whom was shown 500 images from a specially prepared set, which included images of food, faces, neutral objects, or cards with words. The response of the brain of each of the subjects during the demonstration of pictures was recorded by an electroencephalorophic headset ("helmet", which the subjects had to put on).

The results of the analysis showed that the responses of the brains of different people were unique, and CEREBRE was able to uniquely (with 100% certainty) identify each of the fifty subjects.

Previously, another group of researchers turned to the idea of a "brain imprint", but their study recorded the neural activity of the brain during the performance of certain tasks. Using this approach, it was possible to achieve an accuracy of 80-90%, and the previous best result of the authors was 97% using only words (without images). The researchers emphasize the importance of 100 percent certainty when using "brain prints" to gain access to classified information.
