Why did dinosaurs become extinct?

Approximately 180 million years ago, reptiles, or reptiles, reigned supreme on our planet. There were so many of them and they had such incredible power that that period is known as the "era of lizards". Scientists call it the Mesozoic era.

The largest of the reptiles were dinosaurs, some species of which were, apparently, the largest animals that ever lived on Earth. And yet, despite their amazing power, about 60 million years ago, dinosaurs died out, as changing living conditions made their continued existence impossible.

The first dinosaurs were probably no larger than a turkey, and, like turkeys, they leaned on two legs when walking. Over time, they grew larger and heavier, until finally their legs were unable to support them on dry land. Therefore, dinosaurs began to spend a significant part of their time in rivers and swamps, where the water kept their huge bodies afloat. One of the most gigantic lizards were brontosaurs. The growth of these animals reached 20-25 m, and the weight was 38 tons. However, some of the lizards still remained on land.

For example, a tyrannosaurus is a monster 14 meters long and 8 meters high with a powerful heavy tail and a terrible huge mouth. Most likely, the tyrannosaurus rex was the largest and most ferocious predator in the entire history of the Earth. Some dinosaurs learned to fly, others to swim. However, none of them developed large enough brains. Perhaps for this reason, dinosaurs disappeared from the surface of our planet, as they "did not have the mind" to adapt to the changed living conditions.

Most scientists are inclined to believe that it was global climate change that led to the death of huge pangolins. The swamps gradually dried up, and the dinosaurs could not live on land all the time, moreover, the newly formed mountain ranges prevented their migration to other regions. In addition, climate change also transformed the plant world, and since many of the dinosaurs ate plant foods, they simply died of hunger!

Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

What are the causes of baldness?

There are many different causes of baldness. But in most cases, a person cannot control this process. There is no simple cure for baldness. People name various causes of baldness: aging, unusually high intellectual development, or, conversely, stupidity. But the real cause of baldness is that a person loses their hair!

Structural alopecia is the most common. Hair begins to fall out at the temples or at the crown. Baldness can also appear in other places. This is the most difficult type of hair loss. Nothing can be done about it, as it is a hereditary trait. The inheritance of structural baldness varies by gender. Baldness is more common in men than in women. Very often, women carry the gene that controls baldness and pass this trait on to their children. When this type of baldness shows up, the best thing for a person to do is get used to it!

In men, premature baldness can appear by the age of 25 or even earlier. One of the reasons for such baldness may be the lack of proper care of the scalp, keeping it clean, etc. An imbalance of sex hormones can lead to premature baldness. Taking care of your scalp right away can slow down this kind of hair loss.

Baldness is sometimes a symptom of an illness or other condition. Once health is restored, hair can grow back. Sudden hair loss can occur as a result of typhoid fever, scarlet fever, influenza, or other serious illnesses.

Permanent hair loss or thinning may also be due to malnutrition or dysfunction of the glands, especially the pituitary and thyroid glands. And, of course, baldness can occur due to disorders of the scalp itself, its damage or disease.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

The ozone hole has stabilized 01.10.2012

In August 1985, a conference was held in Prague at which scientist Pavan Bhartia demonstrated disturbing satellite images of the growing ozone hole over the South Pole. This caused numerous debates in the scientific community. As a result, on September 16, 1987, the leading powers of the world, concerned about this phenomenon, submitted a draft treaty known as the Montreal Protocol. This was an important step that marked the phase-out of substances that destroy the Earth's protective ozone layer.

Now, 25 years after that historic event, NASA satellites have brought encouraging news: the largest ozone hole has stabilized and is no longer growing at its peak cycle in late September and early October. Thus, the world has demonstrated another success of international policy in the field of reducing environmental impact. Even 20 years ago, the problem of ozone holes was very acute and was discussed in the media even more actively than global warming today.

The ozone layer of the atmosphere is located at an altitude of 12 to 50 km. It is very important for all life on Earth, as it protects against ultraviolet radiation from the Sun. The ozone hole is a place of thinning or absence of the ozone layer, in the regions under such a hole in the open sun it is extremely dangerous to be, since you can get burns and subsequently skin cancer.

Until the late 1970s, no one worried about ozone depletion. However, after the launch of NASA's Nimbus-7 satellite in October 1978 and the first measurements of the thickness of the Earth's protective shell, the loss of the ozone layer became a real "hot" topic. And then two scientists in California discovered one of the main causes of the most dangerous phenomenon. It turned out to be CFC (chlorofluorocarbon) gas, which was used to fill aerosol cans, for example, hair sprays, and air conditioners, refrigerators.

Nimbus-7 was designed for only a year of operation and could not provide comprehensive data on the thinning of the ozone layer. However, in subsequent years, numerous studies have confirmed the progressive destruction of ozone, which poses a danger to all life on the planet. Under pressure from the scientific community, politicians have been forced to take action and limit the use of CFCs.

Today, the danger of ozone depletion has receded, and few people understand what threat was avoided. According to NASA scientists, if the use of ozone-depleting substances continued, the ozone layer would have thinned by more than 50% by today.
