What are meteors made of? Detailed answer Directory / Big encyclopedia. Questions for quiz and self-education Did you know? What are meteors made of? Perhaps you had to watch the picture when one of the stars, suddenly falling from the sky, rushed to the earth. For a long time, these shooting stars remained a mystery to people. In fact, these objects have nothing to do with real stars and are meteors. Today, they have been studied quite well by astronomers who believe that meteors are fragments of comets. When comets break into millions of small and large pieces, the latter continue to move in the form of "swarms", or meteor showers. These meteor showers or individual especially large meteors move in space in constant orbits. Most meteors are small, but some can weigh several tons. Passing through the earth's atmosphere, they usually burn out completely, and only the largest manage to reach the earth's surface. A meteor that hits the ground is called a meteorite. The largest of them, weighing 60-70 tons, was found in Africa and still lies at the site of its fall. There are two main types of meteorites. Those belonging to the former consist mainly of iron and nickel. They are called metal meteorites. The composition of others includes mainly various minerals and they look like stone blocks burnt by a flame. Such meteorites are called stone, or aeromets. As a rule, both types of meteorites have a black crust on the outside - the result of the strong heating they experienced as they passed through the atmosphere. Author: Likum A. Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia: What role did moira play in the life of gods and people? In Greek mythology, moira are goddesses of fate. Dressed in white and always inseparable moira are three: Clotho, Lachesis and Atropos. Clotho spins the thread of a person's life on a spindle. Lachesis, even before the birth of a person, appoints his lot (measures the thread spun by Clotho) and guides a person through all the vicissitudes of fate, carefully making sure that the thread of life does not break prematurely. Atropos, the youngest and most terrible of the moiras, cuts off the thread spun by Clotho and measured by Lachesis. Some say that Zeus, who weighs human lives and informs the Moira about his decisions, can change his mind and save at will those whom Atropos has already set out to cut the thread of life, so people are to some extent able to manage their own destiny, avoiding dangers. The young gods laughed at moira, and Apollo once even made them drunk to save his friend Admet from death. However, others argue that Zeus himself is also subject to Moira. The wise moira helped people create the alphabet: they invented five vowels and two consonants.
