What is archeology?

Archeology is a science that acquaints us with the life of people who lived on Earth in the past. She is studying everything that remains of the ancient bipedal inhabitants of our planet. The work of archaeologists is divided into two parts. To do any of them requires special training.

The first part is the excavation at the site of ancient settlements. This work must be done slowly and very carefully so as not to damage the excavated objects, which are often very fragile. Records of the progress of excavations are recorded in a special diary.

The second stage is a thorough study of the objects found and the compilation of their detailed description, which is necessary for the information to become available to everyone who is interested in history. After this work is completed, the archaeologist draws conclusions. These conclusions are never complete, because they are based on the study of preserved things. These are mainly objects that once surrounded people in their daily lives. Most of the finds are the ruins of ancient dwellings, tools, jewelry and jewelry, kitchen utensils, and children's toys.

Often archaeologists also find bones of animals whose meat served as food for people. However, researchers rarely find short-lived items made from leather, cloth, wool, wood, or straw. For the same reason, it is often impossible to find surviving works of ancient art, except, of course, those made of metal, stone or ceramics. Archeology arose at a time when people first became interested in the history of human development.

In the XNUMXth century BC e. Greek historian Herodotus visited Egypt, interested in ancient monuments. However, after the decline of ancient Greek civilization, interest in history seemed to fade. It was revived again only in the XNUMXth century, when medieval scholars visiting Italy and Greece began to pay attention to the surviving examples of ancient culture. The inhabitants of Italy began to dig in the ruins, looking for ancient coins, vases and other objects. Soon more and more people began to "excavate in the past", and thus the beginning of the science of archeology was laid.

A New Way to Control and Manipulate Optical Signals 05.05.2024

The modern world of science and technology is developing rapidly, and every day new methods and technologies appear that open up new prospects for us in various fields. One such innovation is the development by German scientists of a new way to control optical signals, which could lead to significant progress in the field of photonics. Recent research has allowed German scientists to create a tunable waveplate inside a fused silica waveguide. This method, based on the use of a liquid crystal layer, allows one to effectively change the polarization of light passing through a waveguide. This technological breakthrough opens up new prospects for the development of compact and efficient photonic devices capable of processing large volumes of data. The electro-optical control of polarization provided by the new method could provide the basis for a new class of integrated photonic devices. This opens up great opportunities for ... >>

Primium Seneca keyboard 05.05.2024

Keyboards are an integral part of our daily computer work. However, one of the main problems that users face is noise, especially in the case of premium models. But with the new Seneca keyboard from Norbauer & Co, that may change. Seneca is not just a keyboard, it is the result of five years of development work to create the ideal device. Every aspect of this keyboard, from acoustic properties to mechanical characteristics, has been carefully considered and balanced. One of the key features of Seneca is its silent stabilizers, which solve the noise problem common to many keyboards. In addition, the keyboard supports various key widths, making it convenient for any user. Although Seneca is not yet available for purchase, it is scheduled for release in late summer. Norbauer & Co's Seneca represents new standards in keyboard design. Her ... >>

The world's tallest astronomical observatory opened 04.05.2024

Exploring space and its mysteries is a task that attracts the attention of astronomers from all over the world. In the fresh air of the high mountains, far from city light pollution, the stars and planets reveal their secrets with greater clarity. A new page is opening in the history of astronomy with the opening of the world's highest astronomical observatory - the Atacama Observatory of the University of Tokyo. The Atacama Observatory, located at an altitude of 5640 meters above sea level, opens up new opportunities for astronomers in the study of space. This site has become the highest location for a ground-based telescope, providing researchers with a unique tool for studying infrared waves in the Universe. Although the high altitude location provides clearer skies and less interference from the atmosphere, building an observatory on a high mountain poses enormous difficulties and challenges. However, despite the difficulties, the new observatory opens up broad research prospects for astronomers. ... >>

Return of Odysseus 02.04.2009

In Homer's "Odyssey" various astronomical events are repeatedly mentioned.

So, in sailing from Troy to Ithaca, Odysseus focuses on the constellations Pleiades and Bootes (and they are visible in the sky at the same time only in March and September). On the morning of arrival at Ithaca, Venus is visible before sunrise. The phase of the moon is approaching the new moon. Homer also writes that the god Hermes flew to the western island of Ogygia and immediately flew back to the east.

This is associated with the movement of Mercury (the Roman name of Hermes) through the sky. The planet changes its apparent direction of motion from west to east every 116 days. And most importantly, in Canto XX, the soothsayer Theoclymenes, predicting the death of Penelope's suitors, speaks of a "terrible shadow" that "rises on the heavenly sun" and "under it the whole earth is covered with darkness" - a clear description of a solar eclipse.

Comparing all these indications, employees of the Rockefeller University (USA) Marcello Magnasco and Constantino Baykuzis calculated the day when Odysseus returned from a long voyage. Dates of past solar eclipses are known with great accuracy.

The astronomical phenomena indicated by Homer during the eclipse in the region of the Ionian Islands coincide only once in 2000 years, and it turns out that the eclipse mentioned in the poem fell on April 16, 1178 BC.
