What is centrifugal force?

When an object is pulled or pushed in such a way that it changes its position (or any changes occur to it at all), then it is said that a force is applied to it. Imagine that you are dragging a heavy log across the ground using your own muscle strength. As soon as you unclench your hands, it will freeze motionless in place. However, suppose you roll the same log in front of you instead of dragging it. In this case, it will continue to move forward for a while after you stop pushing it. Due to what is this happening?

The explanation for this effect was first given by Isaac Newton. For this, he first coined the term inertia. The inertia possessed by any body makes it continue to move when the action of the force that caused this movement has already ceased. In this case, in the absence of resistance forces, the body must move further in a straight line with the same speed as at the moment the force ceases to act. It will remain so until it is subjected to another force. What is inertia, you can experience for yourself when the bus you are riding suddenly brakes, and your body leans forward, trying to keep moving. Let's now move on to centrifugal force.

We note right away that any of us had to deal with it in practice. We notice the result of its action every time we observe an object moving along a curved path. For example, you are sitting on the same bus when it suddenly turns a corner. It is possible that in a moment you will find that, having fallen off the seat, you are helplessly stretched out in the aisle. No one pushed you: you just got under the influence of centrifugal force.

The nature of this force can be explained using the concept of inertia. The fact is that when the bus wraps, then your body tends to move in a straight line in the same direction and go beyond the circle, part of which is the arc described by the bus when turning.

You should know that the centrifugal force always pushes the object in this direction. So when you turn your bike left or right, you are leaning in the same direction. By doing so, you balance the centrifugal force and prevent it from tipping over your car.

What is a rainbow?

The rainbow is one of the most beautiful natural phenomena, and people have long thought about its nature. Even Aristotle, the ancient Greek philosopher, tried to explain the cause of the rainbow.

A sunbeam or ordinary beam of white light is actually a combination of all colors. You have probably noticed what happens when a beam of light hits the bevelled edge of a mirror or the surface of a soap bubble. The white beam splits into different colors. We will see red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple.

An object that can decompose a beam of light into its components is called a "prism". The formed colors create a strip of colored matching lines, which is called the "spectrum".

A rainbow is a large curved spectrum, or a band of colored lines, formed as a result of the decomposition of a beam of light passing through raindrops. In this case, raindrops act as a prism.

A rainbow appears only during a downpour, when it rains and the sun shines at the same time. It is necessary to be strictly between the sun (it should be behind) and the rain (it should be in front of you). Otherwise, you won't see the rainbow! The sun sends out its rays, which, falling on the raindrops, create a spectrum. The sun, your eyes and the center of the rainbow must be in line!

If the sun is high in the sky, it is impossible to draw such a straight line. That is why rainbows can only be observed in the early morning or late afternoon. The morning rainbow means the sun is in the east and the rain is in the west. In an afternoon rainbow, the sun is in the west and the rain is in the east.

Superstitious people believed that the rainbow is a bad omen. They believed that the souls of the dead pass into the other world along the rainbow, and if a rainbow appeared, this means someone's imminent death.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Hive for wild bees 16.07.2003

The English company "Oxford Bee" has launched the production of ready-made houses for wild bees.

In recent years, honey bees in England, and in many other countries, have suffered greatly from parasitic mites. As a result, yields of crops that need pollination by bees have decreased. In this regard, honey bees can be replaced by solitary wild bees - osmia. They do not give in to a tick and, moreover, are more effective in pollination.

Osmias collect pollen on the pubescent underside of the abdomen, rather than tamping it into special baskets on their legs, like a honey bee, therefore increasing the likelihood of pollen getting onto the pistil. Importantly, osmias are distinguished by a complaisant disposition and almost never use their sting. In spring, they begin to fly earlier than ordinary bees, at a lower temperature.

In nature, osmia live in hollow reed stems, empty snail shells, in the passages of woodworms and other tubular cavities. Oxford Bee proposes to attract osmium to the gardens by hanging houses for them. The nest tubes are made of biologically neutral plastic and lined with paper. The hive can be expanded by purchasing individual tubes.
