Where do the various spices come from?

In nature, there is a huge variety of herbaceous plants, and therefore it is not surprising that many of them have found use in medicine or perfumery. Another area where herbs are extremely widely used is cooking. Everyone knows that various spices added in small quantities to the most ordinary dish can turn it into an exquisite dish. Moreover, some of the seasonings have such a strong and peculiar taste and aroma that they should be used very carefully.

There are a great many spices in the world, so we will focus here only on a few that are widespread in Europe.

Basil is a mild, sweet herb that tastes a bit like pepper. It is usually added to salads and spicy snacks.

Sage is especially good in fatty dishes. It has a rather strong aroma, and cheese heads are often wrapped in its leaves to give it a more refined smell.

Several varieties of another spice are known - thyme. Their homeland is the countries of the Mediterranean region.

Thyme has a sharp, specific taste, and it can be used both fresh and dried.

Cloves are put in sweet or spicy dishes. This sweetish, fragrant condiment is the flowers of the clove tree, which grows in the Moluccas.

Mint, whose taste and smell is well known to everyone, got its name in honor of the ancient Greek nymph! According to the myth, a certain goddess, in a fit of jealousy, turned her beautiful nymph rival into this plant. Mint is a member of the mint family, as well as many other herbs used as spices: thyme, basil, sage, rosemary, marjoram. There are 20-25 types of mint, but for cooking various dishes and for flavoring chewing gums, garden mint is most often used.

Latest news of science and technology, new electronics:

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

A chamber the size of a grain of salt 05.12.2021

Scientists from two US universities - Princeton and Washington - have created a tiny chamber the size of a grain of salt.

The camera sensor is only 0,5 mm wide. Its metasurface consists of 1,6 million cylinders at a special inclination. They capture and refract light in the right way, and then algorithms form an image from this data.

Despite the fact that the new sensor is half a million times smaller than a conventional lens, the pictures taken by it are not inferior in quality and even better. The developers believe that the miniature camera opens up new possibilities in fields ranging from robotics to medicine.

Earlier, American specialists created a computer as thin as a sheet of paper. Such a device can be glued to a broken bone and will tell doctors when it is time to remove the screws and plates.
