What is the United Nations?

At times of particular world tension, we hear a lot about the United Nations. What's this? Where did it come from? What is their activity?

Here, we can only give a brief description of the United Nations. But this is what you should know. The United Nations is a government organization. It was created to prevent war, to create better conditions by solving problems through international efforts. The UN Charter was signed in San Francisco on June 26, 1945 by representatives of 50 countries.

According to the Charter, the UN has four purposes. The first is to maintain peace by resolving conflicts through negotiations or by taking measures to deter an aggressor or armed attack. The second task is the development of friendly relations between peoples on the basis of their equal rights and their choice of government. The third is to achieve international cooperation in solving economic, social, cultural and universal problems. And the fourth task is to be the center uniting the actions of all nations to fulfill these tasks.

The UN is divided into 6 main working groups.

The first group is the General Assembly. It consists of representatives of all members of the UN, each has one vote. It is the policy-making body of the UN.

The second group is the Security Council, which is responsible for keeping the peace. China, France, UK, Russia and the US are permanent members and have special voting privileges. The remaining members are elected by the General Assembly for a term of two years.

The third group is the Economic and Social Council, which consists of 19 members. Its functions are to improve the well-being of people, to further strengthen human rights and fundamental freedoms.

The fourth group is the Trusteeship Council, which takes care of the oppressed peoples of the UN and helps them gain self-government.

The fifth group is the International Court of Justice, which arranges open hearings.

And the sixth is the secretariat, the administrative and official body of the UN. Its main leader is the UN Secretary General.

Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

What type of dinosaurs were cold-blooded or warm-blooded?

The body temperature of dinosaurs was 36-38 ° C, that is, about the same as that of modern mammals. This conclusion was made by paleontologists on the basis of an analysis of the tooth enamel of fossil pangolins, namely, by the content and interconnections of heavy oxygen isotopes in it. Thus, dinosaurs had a body temperature higher than the ambient temperature, unlike modern cold-blooded ones. But to argue that dinosaurs were real warm-blooded is also premature.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Telescope to X-ray the Universe 10.01.2015

Delivery of the flight copy of the eRosita X-ray telescope for the Spektr-RG orbital observatory project is scheduled for June 2015. Mikhail Pavlinskiy, Head of the Department of High Energy Astrophysics at IKI RAS, announced this on December 25 at the final session of the conference "High Energy Astrophysics Today and Tomorrow - 2014".

Spektr-RG is a Russian-German orbital X-ray observatory, a joint project of Roscosmos and the German Aerospace Center. The observatory includes two X-ray mirror telescopes: the German eRosita, operating in the energy range of 0,5-10 keV, and the Russian ART-XC (developed by IKI RAS and RFNC-VNIIEF in collaboration with NASA), operating in the energy range of 5-30 keV.

The eRosita X-ray telescope is currently located in Germany, where the flight sample is being assembled. According to Mikhail Pavlinskiy, Head of the Department of High Energy Astrophysics of the IKI RAS, due to the fact that the telescope uses many US-made components, it was necessary to obtain permission from BAFA (German Agency for Economics and Export Control) to export the telescope to Russia. At the beginning of November, it was confirmed that the delivery of eRosita to Russia is possible. It is scheduled for the end of June 2015.

The technological sample of the Russian telescope ART-XC is located at NPO. S. A. Lavochkin, where it is being tested as part of a spacecraft. The launch of the observatory is scheduled for 2016. It will go into orbit from the Baikonur Cosmodrome using a Zenit launch vehicle. The carrier that will be used to launch the apparatus into space is already at the cosmodrome.

The main goal of the project is to study the Universe in the hard X-ray range, search and catalog all the most massive clusters of galaxies in the observable Universe (about 300) and active galactic nuclei (about 000). The all-sky survey is expected to last four years. It will be followed by studies of selected sources in the mode of point observations, which should take three years.
