ENCYCLOPEDIA OF RADIO ELECTRONICS AND ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING Refinement of feed-through ceramic capacitors. Encyclopedia of radio electronics and electrical engineering Encyclopedia of radio electronics and electrical engineering / Ham Radio Technologies Feedthrough Capacitor - More Than Just a Capacitor! In self-made microwave circuits, mounting capacitances and inductances, as well as parasitic couplings, are very important. To reduce them to a minimum allows a simple technique. In my circuits, I use shortened PDA capacitors. After disassembling it and grinding off excess ceramics (up to the boundaries of the outer lining), without a threaded part, it becomes compact. But the main thing is that the capacitor practically gets rid of the inductance of the leads. The scheme is divided into two zones - v.ch. a compartment with an optimal arrangement of parts above the board, and n.ch. compartment, where there is absolutely no v.ch. currents and voltages, under it. After marking, holes for through-hole capacitors are made with an M3 drill, where they are soldered with a minimum (only for soldering the lining) protrusion above the board. And on them, as on contact points, the h.h. part of the schema. In this case, the bushings play the role of reference capacitors without lead inductances! The circuits for bias, power supply, stabilization, and mode adjustment are taken out of the RF. compartment and do not add their parasitic capacitances and connections, which increases the stability of the circuit. With the use of such surface mounting, 2,5 GHz band circuits are easily assembled. Fiberglass is convenient to use 1,5 mm. It is easily cut with scissors and adjusted on sandpaper. Wrapping such a board with tinned tin and disappearing around the perimeter on both sides, we get a rigid box. We solder the covers and the sealed microwave unit is ready! To speed up the process of cutting capacitors, you can chip the ceramic in pieces in the direction from the inside of the tube, and then trim the ends on sandpaper. I took 3300 pF capacitors. If the capacitor “by itself” shortens more than you would like, don’t despair, even 1000 pF on the microwave is more than enough!
