Why do locust infestations happen?

In the Bible, we can read about how locust plagues fell upon people, causing untold disasters. Naturally, in those days, this was considered a punishment from God, just like a flood, drought, or epidemic.

But locust invasions occurred in other countries and in other times. In the western United States, this disaster from 1874 to 1876 caused $200 in damage! The name "locust" refers to many members of the grasshopper family.

The locust is a representative of a group of insects belonging to the Acrididae family. The so-called 17-year-old locust is actually not a locust at all, but a cicada. Many scientists are studying the question of why these insects gather in huge flocks at certain times in some place, and seem to disappear at other times.

It turns out that the types of locusts that arrange such "invasions" exist in two phases (or periods). In one phase they exist singly, in the other - in groups. During these two periods, the locusts are completely different. It changes in color, shape, structure and behavior.

In the phase of solitary existence, locusts do not gather in flocks and behave sluggishly. The color of insects matches the environment. In the group phase, the locust is black or yellow in color, gathers in large groups, behaves actively, agitated, and in addition, the temperature of the insects also rises. There are other differences as well.

The normal period for locusts is the period of solitary existence. When for some reason the locusts are forced to congregate, the insects in the solitary phase produce offspring of the group type. These individuals are mobile and irritable; they begin to move, unite with others, gather in huge flocks, and soon millions of insects are ready to fall upon any region!

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

DVD or FMD ROM 08.01.2003

Will FMD ROM outperform DVD in terms of parameters?

The first parameter is the size/capacity ratio. Here "fluorescent multilayer disk" is beyond competition. The developers claim that even now the first prototypes can accommodate up to 12 GB with a disk size of 5 cm in diameter, that is, on a standard 140-inch drive. This is ten layers. And in the nearest plans of the C3D company there is a desire to at least tenfold the number of layers.

At the same time, the possibility of creating removable storage media with a capacity of tens of terabytes becomes quite real. The capacity that today can only be obtained using huge disk arrays, sometimes occupying entire cabinets and even rooms, will be provided by a compact disk that easily fits in your pocket!

As for the access speed, there is still very little data. The developers promise that this parameter will be much higher than that of DVD. Otherwise, with existing speeds, when working with terabyte arrays of information, even simple operations, such as rereading a disk, can take several hours. New gigantic volumes also require appropriate access speeds.

As for the ratio of capacity / cost of the media, then here FMD ROM has no equal. After all, it is practically a piece of plastic, or rather, a polymer matrix with a photochromic substance, but at a cost, it is just a plastic disk. And no expense to create expensive translucent layers, as in DVD.
