What is an armadillo?

Do you know what an "armadillo" is? It is a small mammal covered in a bony shell resembling armor.

Ten species of armadillos live from the southern United States to southern South America. From above, armadillos are covered with a bone shell, which consists of a plate on the head and two on the back. These two parts are connected by a flexible central part consisting of movable strips. This allows the armadillo to twist and turn. The number of these stripes down the center of the carapace is sometimes used to classify these animals. So, there are seven-band, eight-band, nine-band armadillos.

In the United States, only nine-banded armadillos are found. All armadillos also have a tail completely covered with armor, except for one species - and it is only natural that this armadillo is called soft-tailed! It is rather curious that simple processes without enamel serve as teeth for the armadillo. This is one of those contradictions for which nature is so generous. Armor on the body - and soft teeth! Most animals have the same teeth for life.

Having such teeth, the armadillo is forced to eat soft food - ants, termites, larvae, worms and beetles. As you know, such food can be found among the leaves or in soft ground, and therefore, in order to get it, the armadillo must dig it up. Nature compensated the armadillo for soft teeth by giving it strong claws and strong front paws. An armadillo can dig faster than a dog!

In addition, he uses his claws and front paws to dig holes in which he can quickly hide from his enemies. Most armadillos escape their enemies by running or burrowing. Only one species, the three-banded armadillo, escapes by curling up into a ball. He has a much stronger shell than others, and therefore for him it is quite a reliable way of protection.

When did the first collision of space satellites occur?

In 2009, the first ever spacecraft collision took place. The long-decommissioned Russian military satellite Kosmos-2251 did not share its orbit with the active American satellite Iridium-33. A lot of debris from the collision theoretically threatens other satellites and even the ISS, which in 2012 was maneuvered to avoid encountering one of such fragments.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

LG Smartphone 29.10.2013

LG has officially announced the flexible display smartphone LG Flex, which has been rumored for some time. The flexible display is fixed in the rigid case of the device.

Unlike the Samsung Galaxy Round, the LG Smartphone's display is curved around a horizontal axis rather than a vertical one. LG commented that the case is "curved around the contour of the head." The display diagonal is 6 inches (in the Galaxy Round - 4,7 inches), the screen resolution is 1280 x 720 pixels (against 1920 x 1080 pixels in the Galaxy Round).

LG Flex runs on Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean operating system. The smartphone is equipped with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 4 quad-core processor with a clock speed of 800 GHz, 2,26 GB of RAM, a 2-megapixel camera and a 13 mAh battery.

The rear panel of the LG Flex case, according to the manufacturer, has the property of "self-healing": the scratches that appear on it disappear on their own after a while, after a few minutes. To achieve this effect, the panel was covered with a special film.

The power and volume buttons on the LG Flex, like the flagship smartphone LG G2, are located on the back.

The LG Flex will go on sale in November.
