Why does the cork float?

A little boy who goes fishing does not even think about why the piece of cork from which his float is made is kept on the water. But cork's ability to float has been known since time immemorial, and cork survival gear has been used for thousands of years!

Cork is much lighter than water. The reason for this is that water does not penetrate into its air-filled cells. This protects the cork from filling with water and flooding. Cork is the outer part of the cork oak bark. Two-thirds of cork is produced in Portugal and Spain, where cork oak is cultivated.

Cork oak grows to a height of 6-12 meters, and reaches a thickness of 1 meter. The bark from a tree is usually torn off for the first time after it reaches the age of twenty. This does not harm the tree in any way and cannot cause its death, but it benefits it. After about nine years, the bark peels off again.

The cork obtained after these two times is rough and rough. Subsequently, with repeated stripping of the bark about every nine years, which is carried out for about a hundred years, a higher quality cork is obtained. After stripping, the cork is allowed to dry for several weeks, and then it is boiled to soften and remove tannic acid.

After boiling, the cork is laid out in flat flexible sheets, dried and packed for shipment to all countries of the world. There are two types of raw materials from cork, one of which is called cork wood. This material is used for the manufacture of corks, floats, life jackets.

Another type of raw cork is called ground cork. It is ground and then baked together with certain binders. This material is used to make pipe coatings, shoe sole fillers, car gaskets, and bottle cap liners.

One of the main applications of cork is sound insulation of rooms, insulation of warehouses, refrigeration rooms and refrigerators.

Who is called the widow of Paganini?

Once Paganini performed in the Italian city of Parma, in the palace of Duke Ferdinand of Bourbon. This concert was attended by the artist Pasini, who had a beautiful violin by the famous Guarneri. Pasini invited the virtuoso to play the most difficult composition without preparation (from sight) and promised to give this violin as a gift if not a single mistake was made. Of course, the violin went to Paganini.

From his father Niccolo Paganini inherited a passion for gambling. It often happened that in one evening he lost all the money received from several concerts. Once in the city of Livorno, Paganini managed to lose not only money, but also the very donated violin. Then the great violinist realized that a gambler is "the most insignificant person in the world." And since then abandoned the vicious passion.
But the violin was still played, and in the evening a concert was to take place. Then the impresario Livron (the impresario - the organizer of any spectacular events or the artist's agent acting on his behalf) lent Paganini for performance a violin by Guarneri, made in 1742, which belonged to him.

After a brilliant concert, the admiring Livron exclaimed: "No one but you should play this violin!" - and handed an instrument made by Guarneri Paganini.

Paganini bequeathed this violin to his native city of Genoa. And today it is stored in the city municipality under a glass jar. The Italians call this violin "Paganini's widow".

Since 1954, the Paganini Violin Competition has been held in Genoa. And only the winners of this competition get the right to play his violin.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

Space elevator test 06.09.2018

A team of Japanese scientists from the University of Shizuoka, as well as other organizations, is going to conduct the first experiment related to the idea of developing a "space elevator" - a device capable of theoretically connecting the Earth and a space station with a special cable, which in the future will open up new possibilities in bringing payloads to low Earth orbit, as well as the delivery of people.

This is the first time such an experiment will be conducted in space. Before scientists can begin to create a full-fledged "space elevator", they will have to solve many engineering and scientific issues related to the development of special, high-strength cables, with which the space elevator will rise into orbit. The experiment should take place in the coming days, writes Hi-news.

Within its framework, scientists want to use two ultra-compact cubesat satellites (dimensions 10x10 cm), which will be launched into orbit using the H-2V launch vehicle. The satellites will be interconnected using a 10-meter steel cable, on which an improvised blank will be installed, which will act as an elevator. With this set, the Japanese want to prove the reality of the "space elevator" theory.

The essence of the experiment is to stretch the same elevator along a cable 10 m long. The wire will be in limbo at this time. Cubesats, in turn, are needed in order to keep the cable taut. The "space elevator" will start its journey along the wire from the container inside which the launch vehicle will deliver the satellites into orbit.

It will be possible to monitor the movements of the "space elevator" using cameras installed on satellites. However, experts note that even if successful, the Japanese will not yet approach the end point of the "space elevator" project.

The launch of the H-2V carrier rocket with two satellites on board is scheduled for September 11.
