Retinal scanner for smartphone

Samsung is testing various biometric technologies and is going to implement them in new smartphones. In devices of the sample of 2014, fingerprint scanners will be used, and not sensors that determine the owner of the gadget by the retina. Such an innovation is still considered inconvenient: it will hardly be comfortable to unlock the smartphone in the dark, in a movie theater or while driving, bringing the device close to your face.

In addition, the use of an "eye" sensor will require the installation of an additional camera, which will negatively affect the thickness of the device and its appearance. In this regard, retinal scanners will appear on the mass mobile market only in the next 2-3 years.

At the beginning of the year, executive vice president of Samsung's mobile division, Lee Young Hee, announced that the company is considering installing a retinal scanner to authorize a user's eyes. Manufacturers of such technologies, including IriTech and Sambon Precision, deny cooperation with the South Korean giant.

The Galaxy S5 is expected to be able to identify human fingerprints, as the iPhone 5s does. A similar development will also appear in the flagship gadget manufactured by LG, and later it is possible to equip low-cost mobile electronics with fingerprint scanners.

In the laboratory of Japanese physicist Takashi Yabe, an airplane cut out of aluminum foil was tested, flying on laser energy.

A capsule with water or a special polymer is placed on the tail of the airplane and a beam is directed at it. Evaporating, the substance creates jet thrust. A speed of 1,4 meters per second has been reached.

So far it's a toy, but Professor Yabe believes that in the future, larger devices will be able to fly on the same principle, for example, to take air samples at high altitudes.
