What is a sink?

Can you imagine how many different types of coatings exist to protect living organisms? Nut shells, egg shells, tortoise and crab shells, snail shells.

A shell is a hard shell covering something living. It was made either by its owner himself or by his parents. The shell consists of a certain formation. Walnut shells are from woody matter, other shells are from calcium carbonate (lime). Still others are made of quartz, a kind of glass material.

The shell protects the life hidden in it. Nuts and eggs are not permanently coated. The inner living part - the seed or chick - must grow and crack open the shell to come out.

Crabs and crayfish are not always completely surrounded by their shell. It is made of individual plates held together by a soft substance. This allows the animal to move and bend.

Some creatures, such as beetles, grow inside their hard shells as long as they fit inside. Then it splits, and the insect crawls out. Beneath it is soft and stretchy skin. After a certain time, it hardens and turns into a new shell.

And there are creatures in which the shell is part of the body. Turtle shell is a bone covered with special plates. From above, it consists of her ribs and spine, from below, too, from bone. A turtle cannot live without a shell, just like a person without a backbone and ribs.

A large group of living creatures that have a shell are molluscs. Snails are one of the varieties of this group. Oysters, Hungarians, scallops and many others are bivalves. When threatened, they can completely slam their shells shut.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Petgugu Global cat litter 15.04.2024

Taking care of pets can often be a challenge, especially when it comes to keeping your home clean. A new interesting solution from the Petgugu Global startup has been presented, which will make life easier for cat owners and help them keep their home perfectly clean and tidy. Startup Petgugu Global has unveiled a unique cat toilet that can automatically flush feces, keeping your home clean and fresh. This innovative device is equipped with various smart sensors that monitor your pet's toilet activity and activate to automatically clean after use. The device connects to the sewer system and ensures efficient waste removal without the need for intervention from the owner. Additionally, the toilet has a large flushable storage capacity, making it ideal for multi-cat households. The Petgugu cat litter bowl is designed for use with water-soluble litters and offers a range of additional ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Laser control using sound 07.10.2023

Engineers achieved redirection of laser beams without using traditional optical elements such as lenses and mirrors, and instead used an acoustic grating. This lattice, formed by ultrasonic waves in air, allowed scientists to effectively control the direction of laser pulses, offering a new way to overcome the limitations of traditional laser control methods.

Lasers, widely used in medicine and research, face limitations of traditional optical components, which can become damaged and reduce the quality of laser output.

German researchers at DESY have developed a new approach using ultrasonic speakers to create an acoustic array. By changing the frequency of the sound, they could control the structure of the grating, directing the laser beam with high precision. More than half of the laser beam's power was successfully redirected using this method.

The scientists note that they used a high-power laser with a peak power of 20 gigawatts, which typically damages optical elements. Potentially, improvements to this system could lead to the replacement of traditional components, improving the efficiency of laser technology.

The same principle using sound has been successfully applied by other researchers, allowing complex structures such as glue, plastic and wooden parts to be levitated and assembled in the air.
