Where does wind come from?

The reasons for the appearance of wind can be considered in different ways. First, you can consider the wind in relation to your area and, secondly, in relation to the entire surface of the Earth.

In any area there is a pressure difference, so the wind blows in the area. If you live on the coast, you can watch it every day. During the day, the land heats up, the air above the land rises, and the cold wind from the sea takes its place. At night, the land cools down, but the water remains warm, the warm air above the water rises, and the breeze is already blowing from the shore, taking the place of the warm rising air.

What is happening in our area is happening to the wind and on a large scale on the globe. The equator is the warmest place on Earth. Therefore, in this band, warm air constantly rises. This air is directed towards the poles, north and south. Then, at certain latitudes, called "horse latitudes", it descends and continues its movement, but already in two directions - towards the poles and the equator.

If there was no rotation of the Earth, only north and south winds would exist. But due to the rotation of the Earth, all winds in the Northern Hemisphere shift to the right, in the Southern Hemisphere - to the left. Winds blowing from the "horse latitudes" towards the equator are called "trade winds", towards the poles - "wests".

Other parts of the globe also have their own "dominant winds". As you already understood, winds do not come from anywhere, the reason for their appearance is in varying degrees of heating of the Earth's surface in its different regions.

Which railway line is the longest in the world?

The longest railway line on the planet is the Trans-Siberian Railway (Moscow - Vladivostok), the actual length of the main passenger passage of which is 9288,2 kilometers.

The Trans-Siberian Railway passes through the territory of two parts of the world: Europe (0-1777th kilometers) and Asia (1778-9289th kilometers). Europe accounts for 19,1 percent of the entire journey, Asia - 80,9 percent. There are 87 cities along the highway. 5 of them have a population of over 1 million people (Moscow, Perm, Yekaterinburg, Omsk, Novosibirsk). 14 cities are the centers of subjects of the Russian Federation.

On its way, the Trans-Siberian Railway crosses 28 rivers, of which 16 are large (Volga, Vyatka, Kama, Tobol, Irtysh, Ob, Tom, Chulym, Yenisei, Oka, Selenga, Zeya, Bureya, Amur, Khor, Ussuri). 207 kilometers of the road were laid along the shores of Lake Baikal.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

Reduced power consumption of the graphics core 14.02.2014

Intel has developed a new integrated graphics core that it says can improve the battery life of smartphones, tablets and laptops. As Intel spokeswoman Divya Kolar points out, graphics can use a lot of energy, but the new energy-efficient GPU core paired with the company's CPU can achieve a fundamental reduction in energy consumption.

"This graphics core includes a number of new features that increase energy efficiency by 40% - resulting in mobile devices with more battery life for the same performance, or increased performance when needed," she wrote in a company blog.

The graphics core was developed by Intel specialists. The company spoke about the technology at the International Solid State Circuits Conference in San Francisco. It is worth noting that the graphics may soon be used in the company's chips. The fact is that the current core is designed for a run-in 22-nm process technology. However, Intel does not say which commercial chips are in question, saying only that this is a single-chip system (it can be assumed that energy-efficient graphics will appear in the Atom series processors for tablets and smartphones). So far, the GPU is being tested on a prototype processor in Intel's research labs.

Promising technologies developed in the depths of Intel eventually (not always soon) are being introduced into final consumer products. For example, many of the graphics and computing technologies from Intel's Larrabee discrete graphics project are now used in the company's integrated GPUs, as well as in the highly parallel Xeon Phi server processors.

The company says that the main cost savings in mobile chips are usually achieved by developers by lowering the operating voltage of the chips. Taking advantage of 22nm technology with 3D transistors enables high performance even at lower voltages. However, despite the 3D transistors, some specialized blocks (like memory arrays) inside the graphics core act as a noticeable limiter for the entire chip in terms of the minimum voltage (Vmin). The new GPU design uses a special method of selectively boosting the Vmin voltage for individual chip blocks (primarily for memory arrays). This resulted in a large increase in energy efficiency.

To achieve additional savings, Intel has improved the operation of intelligent adaptive control circuits for power consumption of the chip (primarily frequency and voltage depending on the load). Another feature of the new Intel graphics core is the ability to very quickly switch to standby mode, in which energy savings are 10 times more powerful than active mode - this is another way to save energy in mobile devices. The number of blocks that can go into standby mode on their own or turn off completely has also been increased.
