What is a constellation?

Watching the stars, you probably noticed that they form letters, triangles, squares familiar to us. For a long time, in various parts of the world, man has given names to such groups of stars. Translated from Latin, "constellation" means "a group of stars."

The modern names of the constellations came to us from the ancient Romans, and to them - from ancient Greece. The ancient Greeks borrowed part of the information about the stars from the inhabitants of Babylon.

In Babylon, groups of stars were assigned the names of animals, the names of kings, queens, heroes of myths. Later, the ancient Greeks replaced many of the names given in Babylon with their own, using the names of their heroes - Hercules, Orion, Perseus. Ancient Rome made its own changes. We use the old names these days, but it's not always easy to imagine the images behind the names. For example, the constellations Eagle, Ursa Minor and Ursa Major, the constellation Libra do not really correspond to their names.

Around 150 AD, the famous astronomer Ptolemy noted 48 constellations that were known to him. This list did not include the constellations of the entire starry sky, there were many omissions. Therefore, later astronomers expanded the list compiled by Ptolemy. Some of these last constellations bear the names of scientific instruments, such as Sextant, Compass, Microscope. Today, astronomers know 88 constellations of the starry sky.

The constellation occupies a certain part of the sky. This means that each star is located in its own constellation, just as each city in the United States, for example, is located in a particular state. At one time, the boundaries of the constellations were inconsistent, often broken. In 1928, astronomers decided to straighten them so that the boundaries of the constellations form only straight lines.

What parasite replaces an entire host organ?

The parasite Cymothoa exigua, or "tongue-eating woodlice", is the only parasite known to science that replaces an entire host organ. The woodlouse penetrates through the gills into the body of the spotted pink snapper, then sucks the blood out of the tongue of the fish and, after its atrophy, begins to perform the functions of the tongue itself. Along the way, the parasite feeds on the blood and mucus of the host, but this does not lead to the death of the fish.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Yeast transplanted with human genes 28.09.2022

Dutch biotechnologists transplanted human genes responsible for muscle metabolism into yeast. In this way, it will be possible to study cellular processes, the understanding of which will help in the search for a cure for cancer.

Yeast DNA has been modified before, but this is the first time scientists have been able to include such a large and important piece of the human genome.

Humanized yeast is easier to grow than human cells and tissues. It is also easier to study them - the model turns out to be clean, there are no extraneous interactions in it.

Using genetically engineered yeast, researchers will study the process of breaking down sugar to capture energy and create cell blocks inside muscle cells.

"This seems odd because yeast is a simple single-celled organism and humans are a very complex system, but the cells in both cases act very similarly," said lead author Pascal Daran-Lapouhade.
