What is a diatom?

Diatoms are tiny single-celled plants. They exist by the billions in all the waters of the Earth. The largest of them are barely visible to the naked eye, and the smallest are 0,025 millimeters long. Although they are so tiny, each of them builds a stone shelter for herself, as hard as granite. There are over 10 species of diatoms. They have a variety of shapes. Their dwelling consists of two shells, one above the other, like the top and bottom of a box. They are connected by edges, as if connected by belts. Inside is a living plant.

Most diatoms float in water or attach themselves with a jelly-like substance to rocks or larger plants. Some can safely swim in the water from place to place, but how they move independently is unknown. Diatoms usually reproduce by fission. The cell inside the box divides, the box is divided in two. Each of the halves begins to live an independent life, build a new home.

Diatoms are very important in our life. Together with some others, they are the main plant organisms of the ocean. When alive, they change the mineral substances dissolved in water into organic substances, they are also a source of food for other living organisms living in the wild, including fish and whales. The oil they produce accumulates in the liver of the fish, from where it is industrially extracted. It is very rich in vitamins.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

High current SMD fuses Bourns SF-2923 13.03.2019

Bourns has announced the release of new high-current SMD fuses of the SF-2923HC-C and SF-2923UC-C series of the SinglFuse family.

The design of the new SF-2923HC-C and SF-2923UC-C fuses consists of a rugged silicone insulated ceramic body and a single blow fuse link. These fuses are capable of withstanding higher starting and starting currents, they are highly reliable and can be used in the most severe operating conditions.

The SF-2923HC-C high current series is rated at 60V DC operating voltage with rated operating current ranging from 20A to 50A. Open circuit breaking capacity is limited to 300A at 60V.

The SF-2923UC-C series belongs to the ultra-high current series, having the same package (2923), it received an extended range of rated operating currents up to 100 A, as well as an increased rated voltage up to 80 V (DC). The breaking capacity is 450 A at 80 V.

The operating speed of these fuses can be estimated from the graphs in the technical documentation. For example, if the rated operating current is exceeded by 2,5 times (250% of the rated current), the fuses will blow within 60 seconds.

Both series of fuses are UL 248-14 certified (Underwriters Laboratories) and are designed for use in a variety of power distribution systems, battery-powered sources and many other applications where high current and operating voltage ratings and high current resistance are key requirements. chain break.
