Why does water remain on the skin of a person who has come out of it, and does not roll down?

Water remains on the skin of a person who has left it, and does not roll down, as, for example, from the fat-covered plumage of waterfowl, only because human skin is wetted with water: water molecules are attracted by the forces of intermolecular interaction to the skin stronger than to each other.

The cotton fabric of the towel is even more wetted with water - water molecules are attracted to the fabric of the towel more strongly than to the skin, and when wiped, they pass from the skin to the towel. Otherwise, the towel would simply smear the water over the skin without absorbing it (which is exactly what would happen if the towel was made of synthetic fabric that repels water).

Wetting - a surface phenomenon that occurs when a liquid comes into contact with a solid body - also manifests itself in the spreading of a liquid over a solid surface. It plays an important role in the impregnation and drying of porous materials, washing action, metal soldering, gluing, fluid flow under weightless conditions.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Petgugu Global cat litter 15.04.2024

Taking care of pets can often be a challenge, especially when it comes to keeping your home clean. A new interesting solution from the Petgugu Global startup has been presented, which will make life easier for cat owners and help them keep their home perfectly clean and tidy. Startup Petgugu Global has unveiled a unique cat toilet that can automatically flush feces, keeping your home clean and fresh. The device connects to the sewer system and ensures efficient waste removal without the need for intervention from the owner. Additionally, the toilet has a large flushable storage capacity, making it ideal for multi-cat households. The Petgugu cat litter bowl is designed for use with water-soluble litters and offers a range of additional ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

The longest-lived vertebrate identified 17.08.2016

Marine biologist Julius Nielsen from the University of Copenhagen (Denmark) and his colleagues analyzed the age of Greenland sharks (Somniosus microcephalus). They found that these animals live up to 400 years on average, making them the longest-lived vertebrates on Earth.

The Greenland shark is widely distributed throughout the North Atlantic. Adults of this fish reach 400-500 cm in length. The biology of the species has not yet been sufficiently studied, however, it is known that these sharks grow at a rate of only about 1 cm per year. This fact suggested to scientists that Greenland sharks can live an unusually long time.

Traditional methods for determining the age of fish involve the analysis of calcium-containing tissues. They are very rare in the body of Greenland sharks, so for analysis, ichthyologists used radiocarbon analysis of the lens of the eyes of caught fish. In total, scientists studied 28 female Greenland sharks.

The analysis showed that the average age of the shark is about 272 years. The body length of the oldest sharks in the sample was 493 and 502 cm, and the age was 335 and 392 years, respectively.

A number of previous studies have shown that females of this species reach sexual maturity at a body length of 400 cm, which corresponds to an age of at least 156 years, the authors say. According to the results of this study, the Greenland shark is currently the longest-lived among terrestrial vertebrates.
