Which tree grows the largest fruit in the world?

The largest fruit tree in the world is the jackfruit (Artocarpus heterophyllus). This native of India is currently bred in many countries in South and Southeast Asia - from India to Indonesia. The jackfruit fruit can reach a diameter of 30-40 centimeters, a length of 60-90 centimeters, and a weight of almost 34 kilograms.

A very tasty fruit is similar to melon, mango and papaya, but has one drawback - the specific smell of cologne. The juice is sweet, yellow, brownish or pink in color depending on the maturity of the fruit. The unripe fruit is cooked like a vegetable, while the ripe fruit is eaten raw or canned in syrup. The seeds are boiled or roasted.

In Asia, they say about this tree: "If jackfruit grows in your yard, you will not die of hunger."

Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

For what reason, for one snail, did scientists search for a suitable mating partner on Twitter?

In a very rare mutation, snails are born with their shells twisted counterclockwise instead of clockwise and cannot mate. For one of these individuals, accidentally found near the compost heap and named Jeremy, scientists from Nottingham found a mate via Twitter using the hashtag #snaillove. Owners of similar snails from other parts of England and Spain responded, and one of the snails produced offspring from Jeremy. All newborns had correctly rolled shells.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

Restoration of hair growth on damaged skin 30.11.2018

Scientists from the New York University School of Medicine (USA) studied the effect of various signaling pathways on damaged skin in laboratory mice. In his experiment, these pathways were stimulated by cells called fibroblasts, which produce collagen, a structural protein responsible for maintaining the shape and strength of skin and hair, and also perform a repair function in wounds and any other tissue damage.

The researchers activated the Sonic Hedgehog (SHH) signaling pathway, which cells use to communicate with each other. This pathway is known to play a large role in the early stages of embryonic growth in the womb when hair follicles are formed. But in other cases, the activity of this pathway is suspended. Perhaps this explains why hair follicles cannot grow in skin formed after injury or surgery.

Activation of the SHH signaling pathway helped restore hair growth on damaged skin in laboratory mice. Hair began to grow already within four weeks after the injury to the skin.

"Our results show that stimulating fibroblasts enhance the Sonic Hedgehog signaling pathway and can induce hair growth that has not previously been seen in wound healing," says Cell Biologist Mayumi Ito, Senior Researcher, Associate Professor of Dermatology Ronald O. Perelman at the New York University School of Medicine.

The team plans further research on how chemical and genetic fibroblast stimulants can activate the Sonic Hedgehog signaling pathway in damaged human skin cells.
