Why did Catholic missionaries force the island natives to cut down the coconut tree?

The coconut tree, without much care, provides the natives with food, drinks, textile material, building materials, and fuel. But, according to the Bible, a man must earn his daily bread by the sweat of his brow. Therefore, Catholic missionaries in the XNUMXth century called the coconut tree "the lazy tree." Fearing the detrimental impact of a non-working lifestyle on the morality of their flock - the natives of the southern islands, the missionaries forced them to cut down these trees.

Currently, coconut trees also provide liquid fuel for a small power plant in New Caledonia. On one of the islands of this overseas possession of France, an engine developed by French engineers was installed. It is able to run on oil squeezed from copra, the core of the coconut.

Until now, this oil has been used mainly in soap making, but it can serve as a fuel for a slightly modified internal combustion engine without additional processing.

The 165 kilowatt plant provides electricity for the distiller, which produces fresh water from ocean water for 235 families living on the island. The inhabitants of other tropical islands also intend to acquire similar installations.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

More solar panels in Tokyo 16.09.2022

The Tokyo Metropolitan Region Government has announced a new policy that mandates the installation of solar panels on some of its new homes as part of a move to promote the use of solar energy. The initiative is scheduled to start in 2025 and will be the first of its kind in Japan, according to The Japan News.

About 50 developers building buildings with a total area of at least 20 m2 per year will fall under the new rules requiring the installation of solar panels.

However, the proportion of solar panels required for installation will differ from area to area, taking into account the degree of insolation in a particular place. For example, if in the districts of Chioda and Chuo, where many tall buildings are located, 30% of the roofs should be covered with panels, then in low-rise areas - up to 85%. Since the life cycle of panels is about 20-30 years, the county government will also set up a system to promote their recycling with an eye to preparing for the mass replacement of panels in the future. Panel leasing is not excluded, as well as subsidies for home buyers and other benefits.

According to the publication, some developers are expressing concern about additional costs that can raise the cost of housing. In response, with the start of the program, the authorities promise to strengthen support measures.

Starting in the spring of 2025, new homes across the country must meet certain energy efficiency standards - for example, developers must use materials with a high level of thermal insulation. The local authorities decided to launch their "solar" initiative at the same time as the start of the implementation of national standards in order to make it easier for builders.

Tokyo Metropolitan Governor Yuriko Koike said she hopes the new initiative will be a turning point in history, after which it can be said that "Tokyo has changed."
