Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

Why is it believed that the four-leaf clover brings good luck?

Man's desire to protect himself from unknown forces or create a good fortune for himself has given rise to thousands upon thousands of superstitions all over the world. In principle, we can roughly divide superstitions into those that bring good luck and those that portend misfortune. All over the world, people believe that the four-leaf clover is a sign that portends prosperity and happiness. This is such an ancient superstition that no one can say exactly how or where it originated.

But there is one old legend that says that when Eve was expelled from paradise, she took a quatrefoil with her. Since clover was a plant from the Garden of Eden, it came to be considered a sign of good luck if found in one's garden. Equally widespread and just as difficult to explain is the common belief that a horseshoe brings good luck. Almost every country has its own legend or tradition associated with the horseshoe. The Irish say that the horse was in the barn where Christ was born, so the horseshoe has magical powers.

In Russia, blacksmiths used to be often considered magicians, and they are said to have used a horseshoe to display their magic. Even the ancient Romans believed that finding a lost horseshoe on the road would protect against illness. This was probably due to the fact that iron at that time was considered to bring happiness. As for bad omens, the fear of a black cat is one of the oldest. In the Middle Ages, when people believed in witches, it was believed that witches and evil spirits take the form of a black cat.

These days, many people still feel uncomfortable when a black cat crosses their path. A broken mirror is another bad sign that comes from antiquity. In ancient Greece, they believed that a person sees the will of the gods in a mirror. That is why if the mirror accidentally broke, it meant that the gods did not want the person to see the future, which meant trouble. The Romans believed that a person's health changes every seven years. Since the mirror reflected a person's health, they thought that a broken mirror meant that the person's health would be affected for seven years.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

The development of civilization has changed the asteroid 14.09.2013

A study by scientists from Dartmouth College has established a link between global climate change and an asteroid impact in Canada.

The fall of an asteroid or comet, which occurred 12900 years ago, caused dramatic changes in the climate. These changes led to the extinction of many large mammals, and people, apparently, at this time had to switch from hunting to gathering and growing food.

The fall of the asteroid occurred about 13 thousand years ago, at the beginning of the Younger Dryas period. Studies show that during this period a sharp cooling was observed on the planet: the climate became drier and colder, which affected the fate of the animal world and human civilization. So, in North America, all large animals disappeared, including mastodons, camels, giant sloths and saber-toothed tigers. As a result, the hunting tribes, known to archaeologists as the people of the Clovis culture, put aside their heavy spears and began to gather berries, roots, and catch small game. Such lifestyle changes could be the transition to a new stage in the development of our civilization.

Until now, it was believed that the cooling during the Younger Dryas was caused by a rupture in the North American ice sheet, which released huge amounts of fresh water into the Atlantic Ocean. This caused a blockade of currents that carried warm waters to the north, as a result, the planet's climate changed dramatically.

However, American scientists have found convincing evidence that the fall of an asteroid or comet was the cause of the cooling. Evidence of this is the presence in the geological layer of the Younger Dryas of hardened drops of molten rocks, which were formed as a result of the fall of an unknown celestial body.

It is not clear which asteroid or comet could have caused this cataclysm. Scientists believe that it could be an asteroid that left the 4-kilometer crater Corossal, located in Quebec. Similar hardened drops of mullite and diamond spar have been found in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and other regions of the planet. But until now, these minerals could not be associated with a specific crater. Perhaps it was the celestial body that fell in Canada that gave our civilization an impetus to develop in a new direction.
