Why are Cepheids called the beacons of the universe?

Cepheids are a special type of so-called regular variable stars. In the surface layers of Cepheids, the balance of gravitational and gas pressure forces is disturbed. As a result, their radii periodically change by 10-15 percent, and the temperature - by more than 1000 degrees. At the same time, the apparent brightness of stars also changes periodically.

The Cepheids take their name from the prototype star Delta Cephei, which varies in magnitude from 3,6 to 4,3 with a period of 5,4 days.

As was established in 1912, the periods of change in the brightness of Cepheids are closely related to their luminosity. This connection determined the exceptional importance of these stars for measuring extragalactic distances. By finding a Cepheid in another galaxy and measuring its period of pulsation, one can determine its luminosity (absolute magnitude).

By comparing this value with the apparent brightness (visual magnitude), one can estimate the distance to the Cepheid, and hence to the galaxy in which it is located. This is why the Cepheids are sometimes called the beacons of the universe.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

The body amplifies the sound 20.04.2000

Specialists from the Center for Microelectronics at the University of Kaiserslautern have developed a new Hi-Fi loudspeaker design.

The device, called "bodybass", consists of a special electronic circuit and a powerful but compact woofer and serves as an addition to conventional headphones, allowing you to significantly expand the frequency range of sound reproduction at the expense of the lower part of the spectrum.

The speaker is mounted on the chest and the listener's lungs and bronchi are used as a resonator, and the trachea and upper respiratory tract are used as a sound transmission channel to the hearing organs.
