When saving an AVI file, you need to decide what you want to end up with and make some settings accordingly. It is possible to save as follows:
- processing, compression, audio and video streams;
- processing, compression, only the video stream - the sound remains unchanged;
- processing, compression, only the audio stream - the video remains unchanged.
We set the settings for the video stream.
If you need to compress the video stream again, perhaps with a more compact codec. Or process the stream with filters, and then compress it in the same way - you must select "Full processing mode".
For sound, everything is the same.
By selecting "Full processing mode", make sure that the audio codec is correctly set and configured.
When everything is set up, save the AVI.

You can save the video without sound at all. To do this, respectively, you must select:
You can, and vice versa, save only the sound (in a WAV file). This may be necessary, for example, for sound processing in a more advanced audio editor. I had to pull out, in this way, the sound, which would process it with filters in CoolEdit.
To do this, you do not need to make any specific settings. Just open the AVI file in VirtualDub and immediately:
To attach the sound back to the video, we do this: the AVI file must already be open in VirtualDub, select the file with the sound:
Now, if necessary, just save everything as it is, without any processing - select "Direct stream copy" for video and audio streams and save AVI.
About when you do not need a complete processing of video or sound
You can not compress the video stream, but simply select "Direct stream copy" if you just cut out unnecessary fragments. Filters were not applied.
Note only that in this case the cutout is carried out by keyframes. And if your video is shrunk with large gaps between keyframes, then you may not get exactly what you wanted. Because the frames you choose for the start and end of the cutout may not match the keyframes. This applies in particular to a video stream compressed in MPEG4.
