BOOKS AND ARTICLES MTS file format of modern camcorders Modern camcorders shoot video on memory cards. This decision has been suggested for a long time, but it has received real accessibility and mass character only now, when memory cards have reached high read / write speeds, have become capacious and affordable. Compared to DV cassettes and DVDs, the advantage is clear. Firstly, it consists in the absence of mechanics (moving parts), which simplified the design of video cameras, increased their reliability and reduced energy consumption. Secondly, the convenience of working with footage has increased significantly. Now they are ordinary files in a standard directory structure that you just need to copy to your computer. Direct-to-DVD camcorders also create a certain directory and file structure that conforms to the standard, but everyone knows the limitations in terms of quality and duration of recording on these media. There are no such problems with memory cards. And yes, they are easier to work with. MTS has been chosen as the standard HD video file format. It is used by Sony, Panasonic, Canon and other camcorders. The format is just a wrapper that can contain a video stream in MPEG-2 or MPEG-4 formats. The video resolution and audio format may differ depending on the capabilities of the camcorders and shooting modes. The Canon Vixia HF M30 camera that fell into my hands recorded MTS files to a memory card with the following parameters:
Each start and stop of recording on the camera is a separate MTS file. For example, a 90 second recording had a file size of 72 MB. Thus, an hour of recording can take up to 3 GB, which is quite a bit, given the high HD quality. These figures were achieved with a bitrate of 7 Mbps set in the camcorder settings. It is quite enough not to see squares and any other unpleasant effects noticeable to the eyes in the image. If the camera records with a higher bitrate or an MPEG-2 codec is used, then the stream size will undoubtedly be larger. Accordingly, the files will be larger in size. However, the size of modern hard drives is also by no means small. In particular, disks with a capacity of 1-2 TB are becoming quite common today, which will allow you to record more than a hundred hours of video with a bit rate even 2-3 times higher. This all goes to the fact that you should not try to convert MTS files to another format. Even if you want to do this for the convenience of viewing, for example, on a consumer player, then obviously you should not delete the original MTS files of records that are valuable to you. A similar advice on saving recordings in the original format was given with the widespread use of DV cassettes, and those who used it now do not regret that they once did not convert their recordings to another format that might have seemed quite high quality before. Time passes, technologies change, and our quality requirements increase. Remember, 15 years ago, and VHS-recordings seemed quite good. The new Windows 7 operating system has its own MPEG-2/4 decoder and Windows Media Player version 12, which supports MTS files by default. That is, they can be easily opened and viewed like any other video. If desired, files of this format can be viewed with other players that are convenient for you and have MTS support. At the same time, you don't have to think about the MPEG-2/4 decoder built into the player or a separate one, since it is already in the system. Windows XP and Vista users will have to take care of their own MPEG-4 decoder (MPEG-2 usually already exists) and a player that supports the MTS format. After looking at the capabilities of various programs, you can pay attention that many of them have support for the MTS format. For example, Media Player Classic HomeCinema, which has all the necessary features and a friendly interface, can be a good option. It even has a built-in MPEG-4 decoder, which can be very useful. In addition, this player allows you to use hardware decoding if your video card supports it. Unfortunately, in my case, the ATI Radeon HD 2900 GT video card does not have a hardware MPEG-4 decoder (you can check the capabilities of the video card with the DXVA Checker utility). The built-in MPEG-4 decoder in the Media Player Classic HomeCinema was also not suitable for playing MTS files from the camera. For some reason, the video just didn't play. If it is the same in your case, then the only solution is to install an independent software decoder into the system. By the way, if you plan to do video editing, you will need it anyway. A fairly high-quality and fast MPEG-4 software decoder is the commercial CoreAVC (less than $15). Better to use the latest version. Currently it is version 2.0. After installation, the decoder will be available for use by various programs, including Media Player Classic HomeCinema. It is necessary to prohibit the use of the built-in MPEG-4 (H264) decoder in the program settings, which is done in the "Built-in filters" section. That, in fact, is all. Now you know how to play MTS files on any modern Windows operating systems. You can store these files on your hard drive however you like. For example, put it in directories with meaningful names. At the same time, it will not be superfluous to think about backing up important videos. The easiest way to do this is to copy them to an additional hard drive that you may have in your computer. Although it is more correct and more reliable to create copies, for example, on an external hard drive, which, after the recording is completed, disconnect from the computer and put away. As already noted, if there are MPEG-2/4 decoders in the system, MTS files can not only be played back, but also mounted. Video editing packages that support the MTS format include the following: CyberLink PowerDVD, CyberLink PowerDirector, Sony Vegas Movie Studio Platinum, Sony Vegas Pro, Ulead VideoStudio, Corel WinDVD 9 Plus Blu-ray. All these programs allow you not only to build the desired sequence of videos and cut out unnecessary ones, but also to apply interesting effects.
