Hydroponics, as we know, is a method of growing plants without soil, using nutrients. After integrating the new material into hydroponic systems, scientists noticed that electrical signals stimulated plant growth by 50%. Bioelectronic soil includes organic matter mixed with the leading polymer Pedot, which is widely used in sensors and OLED displays. Study leader Eleni Stavrinidou emphasizes that soil conductivity is a key factor for stimulating plant roots. During the experiment, over 15 days, scientists studied the effect of electrical signals on barley sprouts. Even at a low voltage of 0,5 V, the roots responded actively, which led to a significant increase in plant size. Particularly effective was the improvement in the processing of nitrogen, one of the main nutrients for plant growth.
