External drive Western Digital My Book Duo 44 TB

18.02.2023

Western Digital introduced 44TB external hard drive storage. The My Book Duo model connects via USB Type-C with USB 3.2 Gen 1 support and allows you to create RAID-0 and RAID-1 arrays. The device costs about the same as an NVIDIA RTX 4090 graphics card - $1499,99.

The two-drive My Book Duo was previously sold with storage capacities ranging from 16 TB to 36 TB. The new model includes two 22TB HDDs. Western Digital also added 22TB of single-drive My Book storage, the largest consumer hard drive capacity to date, according to the manufacturer. However, WD started selling 22TB NAS last summer as standalone hard drives.

The 44TB My Book Duo transfers data at speeds up to 5Gbps. Out of the box, AES 256-bit hardware encryption and password protection are supported.

My Book with one 22TB drive costs $599 - about $100 more than the internal 22TB hard drive that Western Digital sells. My Book Duo 44TB costs $149. They are available for purchase and work with Windows 10 and Windows 11, as well as macOS 11 and later (via the NTFS driver), allowing users to switch between Microsoft and Apple operating systems without the need for reformatting.

External hard drives can be a lot slower than their solid state counterparts, but they make up for it in capacity and price. WD's largest external SSD tops out at 32TB and costs $7500, although this model is aimed at professional users.

One reason to buy a 44TB external hard drive has to do with a recent research report on hard drive failure rates. It has been found that smaller capacity hard drives are more prone to failure as they age.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Crystal is 1,6 times stronger and harder than diamond 17.06.2021

American researchers have created a lonsdaleite crystal that is 58% stronger and harder than regular diamond.

Diamond has good optical properties, high thermal conductivity and is the hardest natural material on our planet. It is commonly used in various cutting devices, drills and other abrasive processing tools. However, now scientists have been able to create and study in the laboratory a fairly large sample of a material called lonsdaleite - a hexagonal polymorph of diamond with a denser arrangement of carbon atoms.

To obtain it, the research team used a shock compression method, shooting a small diamond with graphite disks the size of a coin. With the help of compressed gas and gunpowder, the shells were accelerated to an incredible speed of 24 km / h. Colliding with diamond, they created powerful shock waves that compress the crystal structure to lonsdaleite.

At this time, scientists directed small sound waves at the sample and tracked their movement through the material using lasers. The speed of sound movement depends on the density (or rigidity) of the medium in which it moves. After analyzing the data obtained during the experiments, the team determined that lonsdaleite is 58% stronger than diamond, which is the highest among all materials known today.

However, do not expect this modification to become available in the near future. The problem is that in the lab, the ultra-strong form of diamond lasted only a fraction of a second before the crystal was shattered by the enormous impact force of the graphite disk. Therefore, in the future, researchers will look for a way to obtain stable samples.
