Out of reach

Russian empire
Russian empire

Phraseologism: Out of reach.

Meaning: About the inability to get something or someone.

Origin: The expression, which has become popular since 1905, belongs to Admiral F. V. Dubasov (1845-1912), known for the brutal suppression of the Moscow armed uprising. In his "victorious" report to Nicholas II dated December 22, 1905, Dubasov wrote: "Retreating, the rebels, on the one hand, tried and managed to quickly remove the elected leaders out of reach, on the other hand, they left actions in the theater, although scattered, but the most irreconcilable and embittered fighters ... I cannot recognize the rebellious movement as completely suppressed. (Historical Notes, 1946, XVIII, p. 35).

Random phraseology:

Tooth by tooth.

Meaning:

A symbol of revenge, blood feud, etc.

Origin:

From the Bible. In the Old Testament (Leviticus, 24:19-20) it is said that in the code of laws for the Jews, God also established such a rule: "Whoever damages the body of his neighbor, he must do the same thing that he did. A fracture for a fracture, an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth: as he did damage to the body of a man, so it must be done to him. It is also found in other places of the Old Testament (Deuteronomy, 19:21, Exodus 21:24). Although this covenant is found in the Bible - Holy Scripture, nevertheless, it cannot be attributed to the norms of proper Christian morality, bequeathed by Christ, since it condemns the revenge committed by man. This form of regulation of relations between people (tit for tat) was born in pre-Christian, Old Testament times.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. Odysseus didn't live in Ithaca 09.03.2006

For the last three thousand years, the exact location of the birthplace of Odysseus - Ithaca has remained a mystery.

There is a Greek island with that name, but none of its features match Homer's descriptions. This has led many historians to believe that the whole story of Odysseus' return home is just a poetic fiction.

Recently, however, British businessman Robert Beatlestone, who is fond of the works of Homer, found, as he believes, the place where the palace of Odysseus was located. Beatlestone used for this indications available in the Odyssey, as well as geographical, archaeological data and satellite photographs.

According to an amateur archaeologist, the palace was located on the western coast of the island of Kefalonia, closest to modern Ithaca, near the village of Paliki. Apparently, this piece of Kefalonia was once an independent island, but after a major earthquake, the narrow strait that separated the island from Kefalonia was filled up.
