Wait by the sea for weather

Proverbs and sayings
Proverbs and sayings

Phraseologism: Wait by the sea for the weather.

Meaning: It is in vain to hope for something without doing anything to fulfill the desired, to be in a state of indefinite expectation.

Origin: The expression probably arose in the days of the sailing fleet, when one had to wait for a favorable time for sailing. The word weather here means "good weather, bucket ("clear, sunny, dry weather")".

Random phraseology:

A beam of light in a dark realm.

Meaning:

A gratifying, bright phenomenon (a kind, pleasant person) in some difficult, depressing environment (jokingly ironic).

Origin:

The title of an article (1860) by the publicist-democrat Nikolai Aleksandrovich Dobrolyubov (1836-1861), dedicated to N. A. Ostrovsky's drama "Thunderstorm". The suicide of the heroine of this play - Katerina - was considered by Dobrolyubov as a kind of protest against the arbitrariness and ignorance of the "dark kingdom", that is, the world of ignorant tyrant merchants. The author of the article called this protest "a ray of light in a dark kingdom."

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. Nature helps children learn 16.11.2019

Employees of University College London and the British Wildlife Trust decided to find out how nature affects children's school success. By nature, here we mean that classes are not held indoors, but outdoors. Similar studies have been done before, but with adults, and with adults, there was only one benefit from being active in nature.

The experiments involved more than six hundred boys and girls aged seven to eleven, who were given one or more outdoor activities. These were not necessarily classes in nature / biology / ecology with recognizing trees by leaves and birds by voices, collecting arthropods, etc. It could also be, for example, an assignment to write a poem in which a forest would appear, or children did some sculptures from branches and bark - in a word, classes on the subject were completely different. Before and after going out into nature, the children were asked to answer questions about their psychological state, attitudes toward classmates, and attitudes toward school in general.

The research report says that four out of five children said that they became more confident after such classes, 84% said that they feel that they can now take on something that they have not done before; 79% reported that such activities help them learn in general. Most of the children also said that their relationship with the teacher and schoolmates improved after the outdoor activities. In addition, the children generally felt better - physically and mentally. The "effect of nature" had the strongest effect on those who usually do not visit this very nature very often and know little about wild birds and animals.

True, if the improvement in well-being was assessed in specific numbers, and it improved on average from 4,12 to 4,26 on a five-point scale, then it is already more difficult to judge how relations with comrades have changed and how self-confidence has increased: in the report on this account includes only those percentages that were obtained after classes in nature. In a conversation with the researchers, the children said that they now feel more self-confidence - apparently, based on such answers, conclusions were drawn about self-confidence, school relationships, and so on. On the other hand, if children's well-being significantly improved - mentally and physically - then their relationships with others and with themselves could also improve.
