If they don't have bread, let them eat cakes!

Marie Antoinette of Austria
Marie Antoinette of Austria

Phraseologism: If they don't have bread, let them eat cakes!

Meaning: You can always find a way out of a difficult situation (ironic).

Origin: Russian translation of the legendary French phrase: "Qu'ils mangent de la brioche", lit. "Let them eat brioche", which has become a symbol of the extreme detachment of the supreme absolutist power from the real problems of the common people. It has a confusing origin. According to the most common version, it belongs to Marie Antoinette, although the chronological comparison of the queen's biographical data does not match either the date of the phrase's appearance or its content. There is an opinion that this phrase is interpreted incorrectly, not knowing the trade traditions of those years. Traders were required by law to sell expensive pastries (in this case, brioche) for the same price as regular bread if they were in short supply. Many refused to do this because of the obvious losses, but the fact remains: if there was no bread, bakeries had to provide baking for the same money for sale. So the phrase that has become legendary may not at all be a symbol of the soulless cruelty of French absolutism.

Random phraseology:

Midnight is approaching, but Hermann is still gone.

Meaning:

It is used as an ironic commentary on the situation when someone is late, does not come at the appointed hour. It also serves to express annoyance about it.

Origin:

From the opera The Queen of Spades (premiered on December 7, 1890), written by P. I. Tchaikovsky to a libretto by Modest Ilyich Tchaikovsky, the composer's brother. The opera is based on the story "The Queen of Spades" (1833) by A. S. Pushkin. The correct spelling of the hero's surname is Hermann, not Hermann, as is often the case. Apparently, the mistake occurs due to the association with the well-known name Herman, but Pushkin has a surname, not a given name.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food.
