Origin: From the essay "A Quarter of a Horse" (cycle "Live Numbers", 1888) by the populist writer Gleb Ivanovich Uspensky (1843-1902). The essay describes the situation of one of the horseless peasant families, whose share, according to statistics, is "a quarter of a horse."
