Give me a foothold
Archimedes
Phraseologism: Give me a foothold.
Meaning: Give me the opportunity to do what I want, and I will do a great, important thing, I will surprise everyone.
Origin: From ancient Greek (in Latin transliteration): "Dos moipu sto, kai tan gan kinaso" - "Give me where to stand, and I will turn the Earth." The words of the great physicist and mathematician of classical antiquity Archimedes of Syracuse (287-212 BC). This is a development of the basic idea of the law of the lever, discovered by Archimedes: the longer the lever, the more power it provides. Accordingly, an infinitely long lever has an infinitely large force. Archimedes had a chance to put this law into practice. When the ruler of the city of Syracuse, Hieron, asked the thinker to show his action, Archimedes, having built a rather complex system of levers, pulled the ship ashore with one movement of his hand, that is, he did the work of hundreds of people alone.

Artificial leather for touch emulation
15.04.2024
In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men
14.04.2024
The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>
Random news from the Archive Antistress for drivers
14.07.2019
The British company Jaguar Land Rover is developing a new technology based on artificial intelligence that will target the driver's mood and try to improve it.
The system will use data from the cabin camera and biometric sensors to analyze and evaluate the driver's condition, adapting a number of functions, such as heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems, as well as multimedia system and lighting settings. Different settings will change depending on the expression on the driver's face to help him relieve stress and calm down as soon as possible.
The new system will work on the basis of advanced artificial intelligence technologies, which will allow you to instantly adapt to subtle changes in the facial expressions of each individual person and automatically activate the appropriate settings. Over time, the system will learn the driver's preferences and be able to select the appropriate settings with maximum accuracy: changing the contour lighting, adjusting the temperature and selecting music tracks.
Jaguar Land Rover is also testing a similar technology for rear passengers, which will work based on cameras in the front headrests. If the system detects signs of fatigue, it can dim lights, darken windows and raise the temperature in the rear of the car to help passengers sleep. The system software represents a new generation of driver fatigue control technology.
