Labors of Hercules

Ancient Greek and Roman mythology
Ancient Greek and Roman mythology

Phraseologism: Labors of Hercules.

Meaning: Hard work, requiring the application of all the physical and intellectual powers of a person.

Origin: The legendary ancient Roman hero Hercules (Greek - Hercules) in a fit of madness, which was sent to him by the goddess Hera, killed his children. Repentant, Hercules turned to the Delphic oracle, asking him to assign him a punishment that could atone for his offense. The oracle ordered Hercules to serve for 12 years under the king of Tirinth Eurystheus and to fulfill all his orders. In the service of Eurystheus, Hercules performed his 12 legendary feats, for which he needed all his strength, as well as ingenuity and good advice from the gods. Feats accomplished by Hercules: 1. Killed the Nemean lion. 2. Defeated the Lernaean Hydra. 3. Caught Evrymansky boar. 4. Caught the elusive Cyrene doe with a net. 5. Exterminated the Stymphalian birds. 6. Cleaned out the stables of King Augeas (see Augean stables). 7. Defeated the Cretan sea bull and brought him to King Eurystheus. 8. He killed the Thracian king Diomedes and brought a herd of bloodthirsty horses to King Eurystheus. 9. Fulfilled the order of the capricious daughter of Tsar Eurystheus Admeta - he visited the country of the Amazons and obtained the magic belt of Queen Hippolyta. 10. He stole a herd of bulls from the giant Gerion and brought them to Eurystheus. 11. He went to the ends of the earth for the golden apples of the Hesperides, defeated Antaeus and measured his strength with Atlas, for some time doing his work, holding the vault of heaven on his shoulders. 12. He descended into the underworld Tartarus, captured the three-headed dog Cerberus and brought him to Eurystheus, who, frightened of the dog, ordered him to be sent back.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Petgugu Global cat litter 15.04.2024

Taking care of pets can often be a challenge, especially when it comes to keeping your home clean. A new interesting solution from the Petgugu Global startup has been presented, which will make life easier for cat owners and help them keep their home perfectly clean and tidy. Startup Petgugu Global has unveiled a unique cat toilet that can automatically flush feces, keeping your home clean and fresh. This innovative device is equipped with various smart sensors that monitor your pet's toilet activity and activate to automatically clean after use. The device connects to the sewer system and ensures efficient waste removal without the need for intervention from the owner. Additionally, the toilet has a large flushable storage capacity, making it ideal for multi-cat households. The Petgugu cat litter bowl is designed for use with water-soluble litters and offers a range of additional ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Adsorbent instead of cold 10.11.2018

In today's world, we are surrounded on all sides by polymers. There are so many of them that polymer waste is a serious problem for the oceans - but here, as they say, they themselves are to blame. However, in addition to the problem of waste, there is another one.

The fact is that polymer production is a very costly process in terms of energy. For example, before a conventional bag can be made from polyethylene, the polyethylene itself must first be made from ethylene. And before that, get ethylene, because it is not found in nature. Ethylene is produced from other hydrocarbons using a process called pyrolysis: hydrocarbon raw materials are heated in special apparatus, as a result of which large molecules fall apart into smaller ones, among which there is ethylene. But in addition to the ethylene we need, many more different substances are formed that must somehow be removed from this mixture, because ethylene must be of a very high degree of purity in order to produce polyethylene.

The separation and purification process is the cornerstone of all chemical production. It is not so difficult to get some substance - it is difficult to separate it from others later. For these purposes, factories have huge installations, and they also consume resources in proportion. The main problematic impurity in ethylene is its practically native chemical "brother" ethane. They are both very similar in their properties and therefore it is very difficult to separate them from each other. For this, plants build complex cryogenic plants that purify ethylene from ethane at low temperature and high pressure. Naturally, this not only makes production more expensive, but also leads to unnecessary emissions into the environment and the consumption of resources.

One possible solution to the problem is the use of adsorbents. Instead of cooling, compressing and heating millions of tons of a gas mixture, it would be nice to pass it through some kind of filter that adsorbs ethane and gives pure ethylene at the exit. Researchers have been struggling for years to create such materials. A few years ago, ethane and ethylene were separated using metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), but with one very significant "but". The developed adsorbent retained ethylene, but, on the contrary, let ethane through. That is, the separation occurred the other way around - not ethylene was cleaned from ethane, but ethane from ethylene. Taking into account the fact that in real conditions the mixture contains much more ethylene, extra work was obtained, which was no better than cryogenic separation.

Researchers from China and the US have unveiled a substance that scavenges ethane from a mixture without touching ethylene. This adsorbent is an iron-based metal-organic frame structure, however, unlike earlier designs, oxygen atoms were placed on iron atoms. Such a molecular structure turned out to be able to effectively bind ethane molecules, while ethylene molecules did not attach to such "receptors". As a result, the resulting adsorbent became capable of "correctly" separating the ethane-ethylene mixture in one stage: binding ethane and passing ethylene.
