Haroun al-Rashid

Thousand and One Nights
Thousand and One Nights

Phraseologism: Haroun al-Rashid.

Meaning: 1. A wise ruler close to the people. 2. A fabulously rich person who distributes wealth with a generous hand, helps people, etc. (jokingly ironic).

Origin: More precisely, Harun-ar-Rashid, the Caliph of Baghdad (786-809), idealized by Arabic folklore. In the tales of "A Thousand and One Nights" Harun al-Rashid is the patron of the arts, a wise, just father of the people, in an effort to find out the needs of the poorest population, he wanders, disguised as a merchant, through the streets of Baghdad, usually accompanied by his vizier Jafar Barmakid. "Rashid" is Arabic for "just". The historical caliph Harun al-Rashid is completely different from the idealized image of the Thousand and One Nights.

Random phraseology:

Understand in sausage scraps.

Meaning:

To understand nothing, not to comprehend, not to understand (cf: "like a pig understands someone in oranges."), is more often used in the form of a question: "what do you understand in sausage scraps?"

Origin:

Sausage trimmings - leftovers from sausage cutting (tails, rings), which are usually thrown away. The expression arose as a result of rethinking the original meaning (what can be understood in the garbage?).

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>
